My daughter is researching dominant and recessive traits in chickens for her science fair project. She's making predictions on traits like feathered feet and comb type and stuff like that using our little backyard flock. We are attempting to hatch some fertilized eggs to test her hypothesis.

Of course, this is all just a grand scheme on my part to have an excuse to hatch some babies.

Today we set 21 eggs. We tried once before with just 6 eggs and that was a big giant flop. Hopefully we learned a bit and this time will be more successful.

Stay tuned for exciting developments!

Well this whole project is going to give me a heart attack.

We candled yesterday (day 5). I can't see inside the green eggs at all. The darker brown Red Star eggs are also pretty tough to see through, and I have a super strong flashlight. The light brahma eggs that I candled I could see into, but I didn't see any veins. The only ones that I could tell for sure something good was happening was my silkie eggs.

Of course I left them all in there and will hope for the best.

Also, we had two temp spikes up to 104. Darn LG still air! Since it's a still air and the temp should be a little higher anyway, I'm hoping those 104s didn't cook the little fellers. We just really want DD to have a couple of chicks to demonstrate the genetics principles she is learning about for her project.
