The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I have one for us today!

Yesterday I received a package of Partridge Penesesenca and Wheaten Penedesenca extra eggs fro Our Fly Babies. They have a reputation for having very nice PPs. Un fortunately they fall into the category of Good Breeders but bad shippers.

The Box was a shingle USPS priority box.

Everything inside the box was paper! Notice the wet looking partial carton at the back of the box.

This is the box close up.

This is what the eggs looked like after un packing.

I was shipped 14 eggs and two were cracked and leaking. Candling showed two more with hairline cracks upon candling. The leaking eggs were already smelling bad so the breakage likely happened at the first Postal Center.

I am going to contact them and give them Oz's letter.

I am so glad I found this thread. I am going to join in this experiment and show what is happening with my eggs. Both shipped from me and to me.
I have had 6 orders of eggs shipped to me in the last 9 months and out of the 6 orders I had 2 successful hatches.

Eggs I bought:

I ordered Blue Orpington eggs and I had 8 hatch out of 12. I was elated! I had another order of eggs shipped to me of Buff Orps from a different breeder and the eggs took 10 days to arrive Priority Mail and they were frozen and broken. Another order of Silkie eggs from a fellow BYC'r got here in great condition and I had 7 hatch from 15. Awesome. I liked the silkies so much that I ordered 2 more boxes of eggs and both boxes were in bad shape and I had no eggs to hatch in those boxes.
Another order of Chocolate Bantam Orps, the box was demolished and the eggs were either broken or scrambled and air cell problems. The sellers all did a great job packaging their eggs. On the Chocolate eggs they double boxed them and the PO dropped a huge pallet of magazines on the box and it smashed into both boxes.
I ordered some English Crele bantam eggs and they arrived this week in perfect condition.

Eggs I sold:
I sold several auctions to a fellow BYC'r and I insured the package. All the eggs were wrapped securely and I placed an additional cardboard support that I thought would make the box bomb proof. NOT! The buyer sent photos of the box and 6 or 7 of the eggs were smashed and the box was beat up on several sides.

I sold another auction to a fellow BYC'r and she noted that the box had been handled roughly by the PO as well.

I am determined to find a way to share eggs with others and to help feed my flock. It is very frustrating to say the least. I looked at all of this thread the last couple of days and I see some awesome ideas. I love the soup can idea, but I don't think I can eat that much soup!
So I contacted the last buyer that had the smashed box of eggs and I am going to send eggs to her to replace the last shipment and I have devised a way to get those eggs there in great shape. I will post photos and updates on how it goes and I will make changes until I can conquer the USPS!
Otherwise it is a waste of my time and I will have to start shipping live chicks instead of hatching eggs.

It is so fun to get a successful hatch and I want to be able to share eggs from my beautiful birds.
Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread. It is very informative and I believe an ongoing project for all of us!

I have eggs coming from one breeder and she insisted on sending FedEx. I am anxious to see how that works out.

I am looking forward to seeing the pictures.

I received these awesome little bantam eggs today. The box was not harmed by the post office and the air cells are immaculate ! The top of the cartons had a deep layer of the shredded paper also. It was just single boxed. But, I got lucky because I think that if the post office did their usual drop kick and slam on this box it would have been similar to the one above of Ronotts.....

Thanks! Here are some photos of the Chocolate Orps that I lost. I had the seller to write Happy Birthday on the box and Fragile! Some body did not want me to have a good Birthday! When I candled the eggs about 1/3 of them were scrambled like the first pic. In the second pic you can see that the aircell was torn.

This box was the inside box. The eggs were destroyed!

It sucks when you open a box and get eggs like that. I am expecting 3 drops by tomorrow. I will be ****** if they come like that
