The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Chicka, if it were me, I would go ahead and start them all at once. The chicks can be removed to a brooder at hatch and they will be week old tutors for the poults. I don't think your shipped eggs should wait a week. I would just stop turning the chicken eggs at day 18.

Yes, they can be combined at a week old. Much more than that is tougher because of the size difference.

I might consider leaving them out for a few days, maybe. That would be a compromise, but I would most likely go ahead and set them all.

Make sure your brooder is big enough, though, I just had to move my two poults and their three chick buddies to a larger space. The chicks were pecking the toes of one of the poults and leaving nasty sores. I sprayed the poults feet and legs with Blu-Kote and put them in a bigger spot. It worked like a charm and she looks like she is wearing purple stockings!

I have some chicken eggs here that came with the turkey eggs, plus some very nice eggs arriving either tues or wed. I will set them Thurs!
And I have a 5x3 foot brooder that I can put them all in and have plenty of room. Thanks ya'll!

Thanks Ron!

Thanks Wisher! I was wondering about that! I was afraid they would get to old by then!

Hey, you want BCMs? Then check out xlboergoats' auctions on eBay. Show quality birds, and they're selling hatching eggs. If you google Marans2XL, you'll find their website, down in Arp, TX. They sell them for $30/dozen, plus shipping, if you buy direct. I just bought my 2nd dozen from them via auction, for $36.50, including shipping. The auction closed last night, and already they're on their way, via USPS. The 1st dozen came in, beautifully packed, intact shells, marked with breed, with NO detached air cells, and the yolks were ALL intact. They've been in the incubator for 6 days already, and every egg that I've pulled for spot-checking for development, has shown development. That's why I went with the 2nd dozen!

Do you have pictures of the packing? I would love to see how they were packed.

Unfortunately, Ron, I didn't take pics of the first shipment from xlboergoats. They had them bubble-wrapped, standing with large end up, six per layer, in a standard USPS box. I will take pics of the next shipment, due on Thursday, for the thread.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Update on the Wheaten Penedesencas: OMG! They may all hatch!

Well to be honest I think 10 will go into the Hatcher and 8 or 9 will hatch....But that is amazing for Penedesencas.

That is awesome Ron. We have 30 Speckled Sussex preparing for lockdown tomorrow night. We will candle to see how many truly get locked down. Those were shipped from California to South Carolina from Papa Brooder. Everyone made it undamaged. DH took pictures but has not sent them to me.

Papa Brooder does an amazing job!

I test hatched some eggs for him last winter. It was an amazing assortment of chicks.

Congratulations!
