The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

BOTH great tips, thanks! Here in Alabama, humidity is usually over 50% on sunny days and on cloudy days, it can reach 80-90%. That's why A/C is so important here, even in the spring and fall.

Batten down the hatches for the big snow storm, you guys. I'm sitting here listening to a spring frog singing in the yard.

I've got hermit crabs (I know, totally off the subject) and they need 80% humidity and 80F temperature. Everyone I know always stuggled with their humidity, and I never had to bother with it. Sometimes it would get too high and mold would become an issue.

Sooo, should the time come, I think that's one benefit of living down South... should NOT have issues in the humidity department.

In the winter it gets dry with the heat on though... I think I would wait for March to hatch, so I wouldn't have to deal with that. I'm making all sorts of plans in my mind, okay? LOL I can blame y'all... Hooray for new hobbies, and ones that can actually pay for themselves if you sell the extra chicks *laugh*

I'll be quiet now, taking notes.

It is nice to hear from you! Hermit Crabs!

A problem some have is too much humidity. The egg has to develop over the 18 days and needs to lose some moisture to allow the air cell to get large enough for the chick to internal pip into it. If there is not enough space, the chick will not have enough air until the external pip. the chick could also drown if there is too much water. The amber goo can also block their air way and they suffocate.

That is all part of trouble shooting the hatch.

I got my Eggs From wisher1000 today. Excellent packaging I might add and all arrived safe and sound except for one. Pretty good for traveling 2000miles through the postal system. They sure are hard on packages even though the box was undamaged I'm sure it took a number of flight and landing tests in the hands of a few employees during shipping. I did a preliminary check on air cell and they didn't seem too bad I will let them sit overnight and check again in the am prior to them going into the incubator. Here are the pics of the eggs and box for you guys. I will be posting my incubating results along the way.

Here is the box untouched as it comes from the postal system the eggs in the basket are from my hens yesterday.

You can walk outside right now and get soaking wet from the rain and still not need a jacket. I love the south.

Eh, I'm wearing a t-shirt and went outside a bunch of times today without a jacket. Can't do it for longer than a half hour, but it's fine. Our high was somewhere around 15F today.

I'd better get back to work before BF comes home from the dump and finds I've been on BYC the whole time he's been gone instead of cleaning up.
