Got my other eggs this morning, they came from South Carolina. They looked great, air cells where they are suppose to be. One of the extra's she added has a line through it. It is a very long eggs also and is marked as being a buff orp egg. What am I seeing here?

If it doesn't move when you turn the egg then it's just a shell defect. If it moves, it looks like it might have been partially incubated.

looks to be a thick deposit around the eggs shell. I get that sometimes from one of my RIR's. It doesn't appear to be a blood ring as I see no signs of a developing embryo.

After further review.... It doesnt move, and the exterior of the shell is slightly darker above the line and lighter below the line. Im gonna be like you superchemicalgirl and incubate it and see whats going on at the next candling!

I have some questions about not turning the eggs for a few days,I had never heard off this before.Why would you do this?I have allways read that you need to turn at least twice a day so they don`t stick to the shell.Just curious,I have some eggs comming tomorrow form N.C.I have decided to put mine under my many broodies,but will miss the excitement of watching the eggs in the bator.I love this thread and am learning new things about hatching in a bator.Thanks for the info.

Not turning the eggs is for shipped eggs. Eggs have a finite amount of "energy" in them to develop and hatch. Shipping scrambles the yolk and ova along with damaging the air cell. Letting them sit as still as possible for 5 days or so lets the egg heal. The yolk and ova need to go back together and energy is used to do that. It is kind of like exercising too hard--the body has to repair the muscles which takes energy. The eggs are not supposed to be candled, touched or jostled during this time. They are very fragile during the first week of incubation.

You do not have to do this for non shipped eggs.

ronott1 Yes it does make sense,wish I had know this before maybe I would have had a better hatch rate in my bator.Another question would this apply to broody hatches?She would keep turning them as soon as you put them under her.Darn! now I don`t know what to do,I have 16 eggs comming in the morning,they have been in the mail since Monday.I have broodies to cover them all so didn`t set up the bator.Oh well got a good deal on them will just have to wait and see.
