My girls have two golf balls in the nest box. I thought I'd use them as "training wheels" when they started laying. They've been there for almost 2 years now. Last November, one girl went broody, so we removed them. The next day they all tried laying eggs on the floor. Brats. So back in went the golf balls. Since then, all eggs are in the nest where they belong. That has worked for us.
