Oh! I saw that on the thermostat that went out recently (a loaned-out incubator was returned in disgusting condition and left in a plastic bag), and that bit just fell off when I unscrewed the thermostat. It didn't have the plastic-covered wires though, just the bare wires (and bug skeletons). I'll have to check a newer one when I have a chance.
