The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Alright, thanks. It was a little hard to get a pic of her on the ground because she was in the coop today as it was cold and windy. I will try and get a pic of her tomorrow when she comes out in the morning. Her true color is better in person, it didn't come out well in the pic.

Where did you get her? I agree with desertmarcy that her color look light like a production red, although pictures can be deceiving.

I got her from a small breeder close to me who insisted that they were heriatage rhode island reds. She said people have won awards with them before. I will try and get better pictures tommorrow. She is much darker in person. It is hard with a camera.

Sorry, but that is indeed a hatchery grade, production red stock, based on what we see in those photos. The term "heritage" is mis-used greatly. The reality is whether someone calls them "heritage" or not, it is only important if they are bred to the Standard, established by the APA to grade the birds. Sorry. I'm sure she's a good bird and maybe a great layer, but she's not a standard bred Red.

Can i get any opinions on my RIR pullet? She is 5 months old.

I agree with the other posts, she looks like a Production Rhode Island Red. Many people may call their birds Heritage but they are not true pure Rhode Island Reds. I would like to share a true story when I decided I wanted to raise Pure Rhode Island Reds.

Many years ago I bought eggs from someone who told me his birds were "Heritage". I hatched out the eggs and they turned out to be Production Reds. Later I bought some birds at a poultry show and was told they were from the Reese line. They were nice and dark but weren't exactly what I thought the birds should be like but raised them. They were ok but not what I thought they should look like from seeing other birds I saw being shown at the shows. I did eventually sell the birds and started over with birds from a different breeder. I sold the birds to some people that really didn't care about the characteristics and forms, they just wanted the pretty dark red birds for eggs and pets. I do show my birds and have been very happy with the birds I have now. Any one can say they have "Heritage" birds . I would invest in some birds from a reputable breeder. There are quite a few. If you haven't read these websites, I posted them again. I am an old lady and am sometimes forgetful. Good luck, have fun and happy reading...

Back in July I hatched out 8 WCB Polish from a doz Dick Horstman eggs. He included 2 RC RIR of which 1 hatched with a little help from me.

14 weeks old. I started to notice he was a cut above the other production chickens, and found this thread that the late Bob Blosl had started about Heritage RIR, and read all the posts !!

Today Jan 2nd. 26 weeks old. I think he is going to be an excellent specimen of the RC variety, so I set 15 more eggs from Dick which should hatch on about the 20th this month. If I get any decent pullets from the hatch, I will let them breed back to the male.
What do you think of the K and is my plan feasible? BTW he is still molting as you can see from his tail feathers.

A couple of years ago I got 15 eggs from Dick Horstman, 3 hatched 1 male and 2 females, I'm not complaining. Last spring I got some RCRIR eggs from Idaho. I am going to put a male from that hatch with the females from Disk's and the male from Dick's with the ones from Idaho. Actually they pretty much looked the same. Here are a couple of pictures from Dicks.

I know, hatching eggs that come thru' USPS is a crap shoot...my best ever was 8/15 and my worst 0/12.
The eggs you got from Idaho, are they same line as Dick's or different? just curious.

Not sure exactly but was told they are descendants of Gary Underwood's.

Can you take a better pic of his comb? I cant tell for sure but he looks like he may have an inverted spike. If it indeed is inverted, he should not be bred from. Inverted spike is a disqualification

Does anybody else have problems with their SC RIRs getting frostbite? Temps have been as low as 9 degrees F here and i have noticed some yellowing of the tips of their combs. I applied vaseline just to be safe, but i really can't be doing that to every bird every week for the rest of winter. Anyone else experience this?

I haven't had problems with my single combed birds this year, but you need your coop to be very ventilated, to prevent the coop from getting too moist inside which causes frostbite. I have heard that using Vaseline doesn't actually prevent frostbite, although many poultry books recommend it. What I wouldn't do is put the Vaseline on parts of the comb that are already frost bitten, because I've heard it prevents it from healing. Good luck!
