The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Thanks Matt & SGribble. I also wonder if anyone goes to the Swap Meets. I didn't even notice those until I looked at the site again a little while ago.

What kind of quality line of birds might you expect by going to swap meets? Wouldn't you rather work directly with Steven Gribble or Matt Ulrich, two of the Reds best breeders?

I might not have birds as good as Fred's Hens, Steven Gribble, Matt Ulrich and others but I am happy with what I've have. I got my birds originally from Matt. I do take birds to sell at local swap meets. There are many fine people I have met who would like to get started with some nice birds. I do keep the best but do sell some what I consider to be very nice birds that would be good for anyone who would like to get a start raising some true pure Rhode Island Reds. Most people aren't interested in showing but do want nice birds to raise.

Get your start directly from a breeder. Cmom would also be glad to help you get your start with good birds. But, when we start talking chicken swaps as a good source for a quality start, well…… I'm out of that conversation. LOL

I have no idea what one might expect from a swap meet. I have never been to a swap meet. That is why I asked. We only started raising chickens about 7 months ago. Until I found this thread, I had never had reason to even notice that there was such a thing as a poultry show & until I looked again at the poultry show site, I didn't know there was such a thing as a swap meet. I take it from your reply that swap meets are not something in which quality line breeders would participate. And yes, it would be my pleasure to work with Matt, Steven or Cmom should that opportunity arise. From time to time, I may ask some questions which seem silly, or downright stupid, to those who are experienced. Please forgive me for that but, asking questions & getting answers from experienced, caring people is important to me. Cut us newbies some slack, O.K.?

Thank you, Cmom for your reply. I am trying to learn more about this breed & hope to help my husband expand his flock by finding some pullets or hens for him. He loves his RIRs. When we bought the birds he has now, we didn't know what we were doing. Still don't on many levels. We "happened" upon these "Heritage" RIRs by chance. My husband had been wanting some RIRs, it was Father's Day & I found a breeder who had 5 little RIR chicks left. They just happened to be the really nice ones. Had the breeder had production reds, we would have been none the wiser about the difference at that time. I am not sure the birds he has now are show quality but he loves them & I love him so I'm trying to learn all I can & help him with his birds. I can possibly see him wanting to show his birds in the future but we don't know enough about any aspect of showing birds right now to endeavor to undertake such a thing. I have seen pictures of your RIRs & they are some really pretty birds. I should also tell you that your story of how you built your flock up has been an inspiration & ray of hope for me that my husband may be able to do the same. Thank you.

You never know what you might find, even at a swap meet. The key is to learn how to recognize standard bred birds so you will know and have confidence in what you see. Even breeders may not always have good stock. A lot of learning is available in the earlier pages of these threads. Good luck.
