The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

We show horses from time to time, Often these equine events are at State Fairs. I can tell you all horse shows are not created equal. Some have more competition with bigger classes and better animals. I am just assuming the same holds true with chicken competitions? That gives a newbie like me more opportunity to learn. In horses there seems to one big show per breed where the winner gets the most acclaim. That is a rir show I would like to attend.

At the recent RIR National in Knoxville, (and Matt can correct my iffy memory) there were around total 6500 birds in show. 117 Reds rings a bell, but I could be off on that a bit. A really good Red's turnout might be 30-40 large fowl. There will always be more bantams as more people keep bantams.

If you place (something beyond a "check") in a top show, such as the National, or at a show with big numbers like the Columbus, Ohio show or Knoxville or a show where 75-100 Reds are entered, you've done something to be proud of. Who wants to show against pitiful competition? What can you really learn from a tiny show, with no quality birds? Not so much. Just one old man's opinion. If you're willing to open your eyes, talk to the right people and flat out just listen? You can learn so much, which would be the point in a novice going, it would seem to me. I dunno.

Thanks, that is exactly the kind of specificity I was hoping for. Fortunately both of those shows are in my traveling territory. We have shown horses at OSF for a long time.
Hope to meet you there.

The largest show by numbers yearly is Ohio National in Columbus followed by the Dixie Classic in Knoxville. It also depends where the APA/ABA nationals are held in a particular year. Rhode Island Red participation can vary widely depending on where the shows are and what time of year. Different regions of the country have different "peak" show seasons because of the variation of molting and hatching times. I would venture to say that the highest volume of Large Fowl Reds being shown currently are in the Southeast. The classes seem to be consistently larger because of a resurgence in the Southeast for Large Fowl in general and Reds are one of the most popular breeds of Large Fowl.

Fred I can't remember the exact numbers but I think you are close. There was a pretty strong field of Reds in Bantams and Large Fowl. Probably as big of a field of Large Fowl as I have seen since the Cross Roads show in Indianapolis in 2011.

It is probably one of the largest shows in the Southeast. Was planning to go but it falls on the same weekend as the Daytona 500 of which we already have plans for.
