The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

If you're looking for a somewhat smaller show, but of high quality, consider the Central Indiana show in October. Good way to kick off the fall show season and check out the quality the birds of fellow exhibitors. It's a great way to see if you're keeping up or falling behind on your breeding program and prevents "barn blindness", a condition we must always guard against.
That's probably a bit far a drive for me. I will, however, be at the Indiana State Fair today. Not exhibiting. Just checking out some of the birds. I show market goats too so it would be cool to see some of those. It's my first time going.

This was one of our better males from last year. He's not perfect, and we didn't show him, but he has thrown some very nice offspring. There were bits and pieces of him I wanted to pass on. Pretty happy with the results and he'll live to work again next year. He's up at my buddy, Jeffrey Greene's poultry farm in the UP now.

Some of these pullets are his daughters. The ones that are toe punched outside left. You'll have to zoom some to see those.

Still waiting on those tails. I looked. They're coming, but it's sloooooow.

Nice birds, Fred. It seems like forever when you're waiting for tails to come in, doesn't it? A couple of my pullets are finally showing a little...

There are 2 RIR clubs on FB, and I'm a member of both. The one with the red logo/emblem is the official RIRCA page. I'm Joey Graham on FB... and in real life.   :lau

Joey, that FB page is not the official page of the Red Club. It is not moderated by anyone in the club. It was started several years ago but not by the Red club. The only FB page that was started by the club and the club is responsible for is the members only page. I say this because the club has no control over what is done on or with that page therefore in my mind it does not belong to the club.

Thanks for reminding me, Matt and Fred, and I edited my post to remove the error. I knew one is official and one isn't, but got them mixed up. The red banner on the un-official site confuses me since it matches the RIRCA banner. I won't make that mistake again...

I have a question for the pros. Do you worm your juveniles even if you never see any sign in their stool? My nearly 17 weeks old male birds are looking extra thin right now. At first I attribute it to a growth spurt, and figured high temps may not be helping, either. They seem to be eating good, and get healthy treats on the side, so I'm worried it might be something else... possibly worms. Up to a couple of weeks ago, the males had good width down their backs. Today... not so much.

Pullets appear to be faring better. Some slight slimming, but nothing like my males. Any thoughts?

Yes, on worming. I worm a week after being on soil. Then again at or near final moult. Get it done before laying commences and there is no egg withdrawal issues. I don't have access to a vet and wouldn't use one for this in any case. No problem to do it, if you wish, it just isn't a regular thing among most chicken folks in my circle.

The most popular methods are the Frontline ??? product, which is a drop at the base of the neck and/or at the oil gland. These treats internal and external pests. There are tons of videos, guides and articles on poultry worming, so I won't bother with rehashing it here. The internet is stuffed with resources and demo videos.

Also popular are the worming meds put into a pellet very similar to layer pellet. I find my birds will gobble them up, but then, they gobble up most anything. Your birds may balk at the pellets if they haven't seen anything beside mash or crumbles.

Twin Cities Poultry is an EXCELLENT online store and they come to most major shows in the central US as well and set up a store for the show.
But, even my local Tractor Supply had chicken worming pellets, Frontline, Safeguard, etc.

Ask 10 mentors what to do and you'll get 10 answers, but usually all the answers are good, they represent individual experience.
