Yes ma'am, 100% fresh off the Ulrich farm first generation. There are only 5 males in this group of 18. In the subsequent hatches, the m/f ratio was closer to normal. I'm very happy to see this many pullets.![]()

If you are curious about the history of rhode island reds I would read this.I have a pair of heritage RIRs I bought last fall. They are now 15 months old. I would like some insight on their lines which are Nelson and Ulrich. Any help, history or critiques appreciated
Thanks for the input. Do you know anything about Nelson. I did read some on Ulrich but couldn't seem to find Nelson lines.I think they are beautiful birds. My birds were originally from Matt Ulrich. I got a quad from him several years ago and over the past few years have gotten other males from him. I love the birds. Around 10 years ago I went to a show and I got the same line of birds from another person. I went to another show and saw some beautiful SC RIR's so I sought out the exhibitor (owner) of the birds who happened to be Matt Ulrich. I fell in love with the birds and made arrangements to buy some birds from him and would get them at an upcoming show. The birds I have now are all descendants from those birds.

Jim has has raised birds from most of the different lines. Thanks for the input. Do you know anything about Nelson. I did read some on Ulrich but couldn't seem to find Nelson lines.
If I'm not mistaken, Nelson and Ulrich birds are from the same line. Don no longer handles LF, only bantams, but if I knew "specifically" what it is you want to know about his line, I'd be happy to ask him. Thanks for the input. Do you know anything about Nelson. I think I'm good now. Everyone has been a great help. Enjoyed all the readings and how my birds tie back to Bob the originator of this site and back to Mohawk. I really wanted to ensure before hatching I was doing the breed justice with good stock. Since I only have the pair do you all suggest I acquire a couple of hens from someone else (like you all) to make sure I don't inbreed. I've always been more of a dog guy where inbreeding is bad. I'm pretty caught up on what is good and bad as far as standards and type of the Breed should be.If I'm not mistaken, Nelson and Ulrich birds are from the same line. You can successfully breed a very large flock from a pair. As I was looking over hundreds of RIR at Matt Ulrich's farm, he told me that all of those birds came from a single pair. There are line breeding charts on the web, as well as youtube videos, that show you the proper way to do it. I would prefer to have started with an unrelated trio, but I'll make it just fine with a pair of sisters. It's not a bad idea to freshen the blood with new birds all along, but it's not an absolute must. Line breeding keeeps the line pure, and makes it easier to sort out the bad qualities. If you find you can't breed out any inferior genes, then it's time to bring in some fresh birds. Just my 2c...
