The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I have not yet but thanks to the boys and girls in Washington DC if you get my drift its a wonder we don't pay $25. per bag. Its all part of the ethanol gas thing and the expensive to them for shipping.

That's why you got to breed smarter and have fewer birds. It will kill you with the feed bills and then there are people who want chickens that look pretty in pictures but the birds would barely score 92 points at a chicken show. They are scrubs. You got to find the best strains and or breeds that you can afford to keep and raise.

I have had to scaled down to two breeds from Four. I can not afford even with bantams the cost for electricity to run incubators, water and to feed them.

That's why I am going to two family's in my Red Bantams. I have three buddy's and I can go to them for new blood if I need them.

Keep feeding them this stuff at least it has animal protein in it. bob

Bob, I would love to see $25 a bag for feed. The layer/breeder ration I use is non-GMO, non-soy it does use fish meal which is great, but it runs $33 for 50#

I just got back home from the Farmers Coop. I normally do not shop because they change brands of feed a lot. Anyway I picked up a chick starter called Home Grown, medicated, 20percent protein with animal protein products. It's made in Mo.And cost 17.50 I also picked up a bag of Purina Honor Show Chow medicated, 26 percent protein, 4.5 fat with animal fat and animal protein products and cost 23.50. They also had two different kinds of Purina game feed but they were low in protein and no animal protein. I think one was 12and the other one 16 percent protein.

Yes the Purina Honor show chow broiler and turkey rations have the animal proteins in them too. Its Purina's "Sunfresh recipe blend" feeds that are their vegetarian varieties. <For the soccer moms and tree-huggers.... ect.

What do you do about the medication in the feeds especially if you eat the eggs and/or the birds? That is what I have run into with my dealer swapping feeds all of a sudden.

What "medication" are you concerned with?
I see bacitracin in some especially the one I bought and took back. And I was looking on Purina's website after I read CatDaddy's post and it was showing on Purina's site Amprolium and bacitracin on the broiler and turkey honor show chow. So was not sure about consuming "extra" stuff in our food chain since we seem to get enough of through other sources.

I agree, monnie662. There are some great feeds for market type birds, however would probably be great for standard bred/show type birds, for example,

With that said, I have questioned if there are any concerns or precautions with a feed with Amprolium and bacitracin additives being given to egg producing birds or market birds. Not being for sure, I have asked around, did some internet searches, however never could get a straight and factual answer.

Was thinking the same thought about poultry purchased from the supermarket. I'll try to get an answer I do have a relative in the commercial turkey business. I have found someone who will butcher my extra roosters when I get some hatched, so wanted to keep them as "clean" as I can keep them. I'm optimistic as you can see. Will check out this website you have posted.
