The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I'm making this post to defend the red's that I have. First off, I know that a lot of folks on here got eggs/chicks from Ron Fogle this year and I can't say one thing, good or bad, about them because I never had any of them. I can say that the Don Nelson and the Gary Underwood lines that I have are good layers. It ruffles my feathers a little when I hear "If you are wanting eggs, get Leghorns, production reds etc." If I didn't already have my reds and was reading this kind of talk I would probably never get HRIR's.
I think instead of giving folks this kind of opinion about the breed, why don't you all say If you are wanting egg production you have to get a certain blood line. I will always have the HRIR as long as I have chickens but believe me, there are some lines that I have had that I will never keep again. They are totally useless in the egg department. They were good looking birds and plenty big enough for meat birds BUT I personally will not feed a bird that will not lay enough eggs to help with the feed bills. This is all just my opinion and if I ruffled any feathers, I'm sorry.

I need some True RIR Heritage birds.I bought some from a woman and they are production reds.So do you have any for sale?
One of the things I try to do is find out where you live. There are not many people who have what you want and from the pictures on this thread of adult birds and their chicks you will be happy with what you can get. Many have spare or extra birds they would love to share with you and you would be very proud of them in your yards.

Most of them have what I think are Paramount and that is breed type or shape. If they don't have true R I Red shape and capacity they are not a red. What has got this breed in such trouble mostly now Red Bantams is color. At our shows judges are judging more on color than breed brick shape.

Where do you live? There is still hope before the year is out. There is always next year and more folks than ever to share their birds with you. bob

I want to begin raising real true to breed Standard Rhode Island Reds. I have some birds from a hatchery which has taught me a lot. But as I have evolved in my knowledge and experience I see the value in maintaining the standard. I joined the APA and RIR Club and have been reading, looking around and chatting with different people on the internet. My problem is I do not have a trustworthy source to get stock from that are potential show quality birds. I live in Upstate SC and do not mind a drive to get the quality I am looking for. I think I would like a cockrell and a couple or more young hens or poults to get started. I prefer to minimize the guess work and potential for mistakes even though it may cost me more money up front. Does anyone have any suggestions. Please feel welcome to pm me for privacy if desired. Thanks...

Bob, I live in Upstate SC near Clemson. I am looking for potential show quality birds also. I would love to meet a true professional that could help me get started with the right stock. I have the location and means to do this right. Is there someone I could get birds from this year? I'm thinking an older cockerel with potential and a couple or more pullets or hens. I don't mind a 6 hr drive or so. The next show I see coming up is not until October. Any info you may have would be appreciated.

I live VERY close to you. Mine are from Ron but won't have any until next year.

An off note. Look what I found in the nesting box the other day. Had it's mouth around an egg. I grabbed it by the back of the head and squeezed. The egg slide right out.
