You can send me about 20 of them chicks.LOL Good job!!!

LOL I would love to be able to. I just hope I can get enough soon to fill the orders that folks have been sending me. I just hope that the few that I raised for myself this year do good in the laying department. It's really hard when I don't keep dozens of older ones. I just took these pictures today. They are the Nelson line, 5 months old. I got 2 boys and 4 girls but will only be using 3 of the pullets when they start to lay. The 4th one has a little more lacing on her tail then I want. These are the first hatches from birds from generations apart. I hatched eggs from a lady from Ga. then hatched eggs from William Post (NYREDS) I sort of did like Matt did with the Old Reese birds. I used a Ga bred Cock bird on the hens from these eggs. It seems to have worked pretty well. Now I just have to get my little flock built up a little more.
What do you all think of this guy and gal. Remember, just 5 months old.

Lovely rooster. Has he already shed and grown his neck feathers back? if not I would love to see a molting shot in a month or so. I am finding this neck molting and new feather growth to be quite entertaining.

He is getting them back right now and so are my boys from Matt (Old Reese) I don't remember my birds doing this much like this before. I don't know if it was because of this summer being so hot or what. Even my older Nelson boy did the same thing this year and I know they didn't do this growing out. lol Strange.
It is like they start to grow pin feather type feathers then the hackles fall out before the others are grown in. These pictures were 2 or 3 weeks ago. You can see how their necks were. They are about grown in now. I think our cool nights got their feathers growing back in a little quicker.

I am getting to the point in my hatch this year where I would like to start culling. I know not to cull for color first, but I have just begum to study the color pattern of the Red. I do not have an APA standard, but I have an ABA standard and was surprised to find the color pattern of the Red listed as Black Tailed Red. I thought the Red would have a color pattern of its own. I know the color patterns of the Black Tailed White which are the same for BTR. Is the Red color pattern actually the same as a Black Tailed Red? Do the same principles apply as would apply to the Black Tailed White (Japanese).

I usually go by the legs and wattles more then anything else. Here is a picture of you little ones little brother. He is just 4 week on this picture.

Jimmy I hate to see you've gone off and started crossing in Cornish blood into these Reds now. NAW now, I 'm just kidding. Just look at that boy, all proud and showing off his(past)heritage genes from the Red Malay game fowl from back in the day when the RIRs were developed. That's a cool pose to show just that. This is as important of a feature as the brick body shape too(amongst the multiple other traits). These are a composite breed, and another reason as why breeding them correctly is difficult and also too, why keeping the genes balanced out betwixt all their make ups is so important. Its what makes them what they are.

Hi Jeff,
That doesn't bother me in the least. lol I know how I breed my birds and IF folks say something seriously about me mixing this or that it is okay because again, I know what I do. ha,ha. My mix was getting Nelson eggs from Ga. and Nelson eggs from NYREDS, hatching and raising the chicks up and putting the girls together in one pen with a Nelson boy from Ga. lol I can say that so far I am very well satisfied with what they have produced this year.
As hard as I work to keep the different lines that I have separated, I'm sure not going to intentionally cross anything. That thought never even enters my mind. This little guy is a brother to the one pictured in post #5671. Same daddy but might have a different mom but the hens I used this year are all okay so that is okay with me.
I've been thinking to trying to mix a tom turkey in with some of these girls. Now that would be a good dinner bird. ha,ha,ha

WOW, I was going to run out to the grocery store but now I have to look for a bigger hat. I'm sure hoping for a good hatch for you. That was a long trip through USPS. Thanks Theresa

I am impressed with the pictures of all of the Heritage RIR's on this thread. I do not breed to the extent that most of you do. I am trying to keep my line pure. My birds are all from the Reese/Mohawk line. I do keep the best for breeding and showing. Some of my original birds were purchased from some people in Florida who told me when I bought them that they were descendants from the Reese line. Since I bought birds from Mat1616 which are also from the same line. I love these birds. I will not cross any other lines into them as I want to keep them as pure as possible. I will try to get some better pictures of them this week. My birds have quite dark coloring on their legs and toes. Is this a good thing. A friend of mine who says his birds are Heritage RIR was telling me that the legs need to have more yellow in them. I do not want to cross any other birds into them as I want to keep the line as pure as I can. I do want to show them and was wondering about more yellow in the legs. My friends birds are pretty dark (not as dark as my birds are) and have a lot more yellow in the legs with very little of the brown going up the legs and on the toes. Can I please get some advice and information?

Here are some of the pullets and a cockerel I have kept from this past spring breedings.

This is a cockerel from my early spring breeding.
