The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hey Jimmy, look at this guy. He's twice the size of the other two. What a bruiser.
Hey there Fred, is that a long tail I see on that big butt? They always say fast tails is pullet. lol One Cute chick whether guy or gal. lol Going right about the same size as the Underwood's that I hatched with them. Sure wish I could have gotten you more of them my friend.

Well I had some leftover carrots that were too small to worry about cooking. I sliced them and tossed them out to the chickens. The carrots are still in the yard. Is there a trick to get the chickens to eat the carrots? I can't change anything else about my chickens right now so I thought why not try the carrots and see what happens.

Chop them in a food processor then mix with your feed or toss them out on the ground.

Hey Bob,
I didn't go to Wal mart and get any glue but went to Lowe's and got wax ring so you should know what I was sniffing. ha,ha,ha Also, I wasn't happy happy happy I was fully disgusted. Water came down through my dining room ceiling from the commode. Still don't have it fixed yet. Have to start again in the morning. I hate plumber's work. I'd much rather be sitting out watching my red's eating bugs.

Some questions for those experienced breeders...
What is the minimum breeding pen size per pair/trio?
I have seen Chris's breeding pens (beautiful btw), and each pen is 6x4 I believe.
Will 4x4 work? 6x3?
I don't want to crowd them, but would rather not go bigger than necessary.

Thanks for feedback...

I have made 2 so far that are close to 4 x 8. So I'm interested as well. It would be rater easy to divide my current ones into 4 x 4.

A 3 X 6 seems like it would be okay but a 4 X 4 seems a little small other then for a pair. I really hate to crowd mine. I try to make things that are about the size of the lumber that I use. I'm thinking on a 3 ' 10 " X 6' 3: because the stuff that I use on the roof is 4 ' X 6 1/2 feet. That way it covers the roof good enough. Some that live in the south and don't have to worry about the closed coops are a little more lucky. I'd have frozen combs on everything if I didn't close them in. I have a run for all my coops. Right now I just have the 8 X 8 coops and a large 12 X 28 foot for my layer bunch. I keep between 5 - 8 hens and a boy or two in these coops. I have an 8 x 12 that houses 11 hens and 2 roos but they have a large run that they go in and out of at will. My Mohawks will be in a 8 x 10 coop with a 15 x 20 foot attached run. I will have 5 pullets and 2 cockerels in there. This is just how I do mine. A lot depends on if you have 1 or more males and if they get along. Some will and some won't. I will be building a couple more this weekend.

Have to add. I have my nests on the inside. That makes a difference also. If you have your nests fastened on the outside it doesn't take any room from the inside space. lol

Jimmy had to put the lid on the glue my blood pressure went up but it was a good rush. No Stokes or anything happened

Going to send a name to you of a 4H dad who needs some reds for his daughter.

Boy its hard to find large fowl Reds for every buddy. I am going to get my list of Rhode Island Red Club members out tonight and high light the ten and twenty year breeders in large fowl. I bet there are less than 5 left.

Does Don Nelson have large fowl Reds anymore?

Better be careful with that stuff. lol That blood pressure is the silent killer.

The way I understand it Bob, Don only kept a few for his granddaughter. I have not seen anything anywhere saying that he is still raising them I won't say for sure because I really don't know. I'll see what I can find out and let you know. I have a fella waiting for Nelson chicks. I try my best to help folks but gee with only a few good breeder birds, it is hard. I fully understand what Matt told me last year. lol

Got to go see what I can find out for you.
Later
Jimmy

The rooster I got last year from Matt had a stroke a couple of days ago. My vet looked at him today and said that the kindest thing to do for him would be to put him down, so we did. It broke my heart but I didn't want him to suffer. He could eat and drink ok but could not walk. RIP Newton. Here is Newton with his girls.
