The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hey where did you get you Hertiage birds

Heritage strains of birds bred to the Standard are only available from passionate, preservation minded, keepers and breeders of the birds. They aren't sold at feed stores which mostly re-sell hatchery sourced birds.

Can we help direct you to a person who may have the breed of your choice? This being the Rhode Island Red thread, many of the folks here can help you with chicks or eggs or even a trio of more mature birds if traveling to a poultry show near you. Most shows have a sales aisle where birds are bought and sold.

Welcome to the forum.

Ohh I think I misread your question about the hatching. Yes, I incubate and hatch in the same incubator. To keep the birds separate in these heritage hatches, I am going to cage the eggs when I go into lock down. That way the chicks can't get mixed up. :)

Was looking at Ocala4Sale and saw an ad for Heritage Rhode Island Reds. I was going to inquire as to what line. I know from the pictures they are not Heritage. The beaks aren't right as well as their legs and their coloring. I guess anyone with RIR's can call them Heritage and someone will buy them thinking that they are getting Heritage.

For those using Little Giant incubators, there is a thread with a lot of good information.

I also run my humidity about the same as RedRidge. I used to incubate and hatch in my styrofoam incubators but now I incubate in a cabinet incubator but I still use the styrofoams as hatchers.

Incubator is running good so far.  I cannot get the humidity up though. Its stuck at 34%.

34% is fine until you get to lockdown. I usually aim for 35-40 until lockdown and then between 60-65% those 3 days.

What type of bator is it? Have you used it before? How many days ago did you set?

I actually incubate in 2 Styrofoam and lockdown every 5 days in an Octagon 20

I have seen more than 30 ads just this week for heritage RIR that were NOT. And yes what... they were all charging more than anyone I know with true heritage birds.

Which is why many knowledgeable folks don't care much for the term. The hatcheries have jumped on the bandwagon and refer to the breeds as "heritage" as opposed to the birds being bred to the Standard, of course. This all serves to confuse people, here on BYC and elsewhere. They have come to believe that if the breed is heritage then their chicks/birds are as well.

The ALBC and others had a pretty good thing in mind when this term was popularized, but in the end, the Standard remains and the term heritage has created as much confusion and marketing smoke and mirrors and it did to clear anything up. Cut through the fog and bred to the Standard is the real deal.

OK, just my personal editorial remarks. Now, back to our regularly scheduled programing.

Speaking of your setup cmom. I have three metal shelving units i got for 3.00 each. Not quite as large as yours but I am thinking--perfect outdoor brooders in the chicken "barn". One for a mini greenhouse though and one for possibly my soldier fly breeding greenhouse.

Very excited to finally get the stock going I have been wanting for so long. Taken a few years to get the long-term care growing/building stuff under wraps, but it is finally happening. :)

I was thinking about taking some of the culls from the Underwood line and crossing him to my project rooster. Dom x white rock. I want to use him over some of the white rock culls when I get them from another BYCer as well.

What do you guys think? Pardon the poo, He isn't house broken, lol.

ETA: He has faint ghost barring on his lemon feathers.
