Sorry Guys...as you can tell I like to joke around...LOL. I know Jimmy isn't surprised, he knows how I am. I am serious about my chickens but I like to have fun too.

Matt,
If we can't joke and poke a little fun now and then what is the sense in living. With all the bad things in this world today it is just great that we can find something to put a smile on our faces
.
We are having terrible thunder/lightning storm up here in Pa. right now. I'm praying we don't get power outage. I have eggs that go into lock down today and another batch that hits lock down Friday. It sure would be a shame to loose these eggs now. When the thunder awakened me this morning the first thing I said was Oh Dear Lord don't let the electric go off and stay off for very long.

Hey Sally,
That would be a lot easier then making or investing in a chicken plucker. I imagine we'd have to have heated coops though in our areas. Seems we'd need a lot of moisturizer also. lol

I was just looking over my web site and this photo just really stuck out. I know some have probably seen it on my site or I may have posted it here last year but just thought it deserved re-posting.
I remember how our friend Bob used to preach so much about the dark horn on the beaks and down the front of the legs. Now these are some very nice legs. lol Seriously, I have 4 hens and 3 cock birds of these and all 4 hens have been laying super good for the past 2 1/2 to 3 months and still have the nice color to the legs and 2 of the cock birds still have the dark horn down their legs.
These reds truly are amazing.

Not a RIR but I did set eggs under her this past Sunday night from my Reese/Mohawk girls that I got from Matt. It has been a long time since I've had an old clucking hen running around with chicks so I'm really hoping that she hatches some of these. I also have a large Australian Light Susses hen that is wanting to set so I'm thinking I'll put a few eggs under her tonight. Gosh, I keep saying that I'm going to cut back for this coming winter and every time I turn around I'm setting more eggs. Talk about an addiction, Geez. lol It is really nice to have these hens that go broody. Cuts back on selling eggs but it is a lot less work to be able to let the hens raise them.

I'm testing a broody sumatra. She is on day 3 of the eggs. I think she knows what she is doing but I just have to keep checking on her. Right now I have EE eggs under her. If she does well, I'll know for next time to use better eggs.

I was a little nervous about setting anything because it has been a long time since I've had reds etc go broody. Last year I had a couple of my Underwood's go broody but didn't set them. They showed me though that they will set the full time. This little olive egger hen went broody last year also but I didn't set her. The Susses that I have are really broody girls. lol

I think I'll go this route next year. I really shouldn't need to raise many. I should have a plenty next year. lol

These pic's were taken just a short while ago and you can see that they are still dark legged. Also, these hens are laying really steady.

Wish I could take photos like that! Of course the birds if not good negate any photo skills.

Something for me to aim for with mine the next few years. ;)
