When I was breeding I chose the birds with the best attributes and they were my breeders. The ones in the picture were from a RC RIW broody I had put eggs under. I have another batch of the RC RIW in the incubator due to hatch Sunday. I hope they turn out as good show birds.

Hey folks,
Need some help here. I got an email from a poultry friend and I copied/pasted it to this to see if anyone knows anything about this. The only thing I could come up with was maybe she got bitten by something. Have any of you ever come across this. I did email back asking if the pullet is dead or alive but haven't gotten a reply yet. Will edit when I hear back from him.'

Hey Jim.I just found one of my pullets about 3 mnths old with her whole head swollen up and when I picked her up it felt like fluid under her skin all over her body.have you ever heard of this.I called dr hall there in PA and he said he never seen that before.I mowed around there pen the other day I wonder if she got some kinda allergic reaction..thanks
Got this back from him. She still alive eatin and drinkin water like nothins wrong.I put a little benadrly in her food and she ate all of it

Thanks everyone. The only suggestion I gave for now was to try Tylan 100

I've got one that has been coughing and choking all Spring and she quit but started back today. I was going to put her out of her misery but she went back to moving around and eating so just turned her back out with the girls and it has been raining here for about 3 days and she started back with this choking sound wondered what else to do for her have already done the penicillin and amoxicillin route with her but think I need to do something else, saw the benadryl might have to try that. And this hen feels like she has fluid under her skin on the underside. Strange things sometimes

This may sound really cruel to some on here but I'm sure others would agree. First off, it took me a long time to get what I have with these reds. I do not take a chance of spreading anything if I know it. I will try a little something for a day or two but I have found that the best remedy is the axe. I either put them in an old feed bag and put them in the trash or burn them. I don't want to take a chance that it may be something that would get in the ground if I bury them.
Usually the only thing I use for anything is Tylan 100. I talked to a really big breeder one time and they told me if Tylan doesn't work then nothing would. I don't know but that is all I've ever used. Well, I do have to say that ACV works wonders with a lot of things. My chicks are started out with that in their water from day 1 and kept on it for quite a few weeks and even my big birds get it every so often in their water.I use approx a tbsp per gallon.
Once about 3-4 years ago I had some 6 - 7 week old chicks shipped in and the next day they were all sick. Caught some kind of a cold bug during shipping I guess. They were wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes etc. One of the pullets really had it. I used Tylan for about 2 weeks instead of 7 days. The one pullet, it settled it her eye and the eye swelled really bad and eventually she lost her eye. Totally deteriorated away. I still have her and the other hens today. I butchered the Cock bird.
ACV, Tylan and the axe is all I depend on. I sure don't want to loose a bunch or maybe even all for the sake of one or two.

Well nothing yet on my Nelson eggs in the incubator. If nothing by Sunday doing eggtopsy to see why. So disheartened, 10 potential Nelson chicks and nada! :(

Hoping the ones Fred took to hatch for me fair better.:fl

Yup. Spring was about 7 or 8 days. Winter to summer. You just knew that was going to happen.

Did you say Spring? I think we bypassed it all together. Have been running heater in morning and air conditioner in afternoon, my fig tree is completely confused finally decided to put out some leaves, my hummingbirds came in and then left but finally are coming back the last two days. I was afraid to put the little babies out but I did anyway they needed some running room, when they start peeking over the top of the container it is time to move them out. Have three different age groups outside but only one bunch with heat on them. Have eggs in the bator to candle Sunday and trying to build more coops to put them in until they are bigger, seems like the more I build the more I need. But that is the joy of raising Reds.
