The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

not sure if Ron would have a few birds this fall he is selling.  His health prevented him from hatching his typical number of birds.
His user name on here is FOGELLY.  He had the reese line.  And he has another friend who also breeds the reese line but I can't remember her username.

Where is he located?

Frankly, with gasoline so expensive, a tank of gas both ways? That's $100 for many vehicles. Cheaper to just have the seller stick a K in a box like this ($20) and mail him over. ($50) You'd have him overnight. Just sayin'.

We're shipping birds to and from. Cheaper, in the end, then messing with driving, but to each their own.

If I go through having a cockerel shipped over, should I might as well make it a trio? Are any of my pullets honestly worth keeping?

That's your call. It ups the financial ante. As a breeder, I've given many Ks away for the shipping, as I'm just going to eat them anyway. A quality trio? Well now, that's a whole 'nother matter. Not just that the shipping is 3X, as the PO goes by the pound, but a quality trio may fetch around $75 to $100 for the birds alone, in my experience.

For example, I'm selling a high quality, breeding quality pair of Barred Rocks tomorrow and $50 is my charge, which is a steal, honestly, given their size and better quality.

I understand. I think I may just search for a K, since I have four pullets. I'll just have to cull hard. Do you suggest breeding back to the K next generation, or picking stock from the new batch? I'm thinking that if the cockerel is higher quality than my pullets, I'll be trying to raise my quality up to him, and therefore breed back to him until the quality is consistent. Then I can focus more on other faults. Is this a sound plan?

You want to spend some time reading the spiral type breeding plan. I'd recommend this site as a starting point. The author started this thread before his untimely passing.

You'll see topics on spiral and line breeding of birds. Don't be concerned that some of the articles are about White Rocks. The principles are applicable.

Bob's timeless advice on Reds fills the various topics. To me? It is fundamental foundational reading. Enjoy.

I have read a lot of the stuff Bob has written. He was a very wise man and knew his birds. Way back he did raise LF Heritage RIR (Reese/Mohawk) which is has also written about. Matt1616 has been continuing the line along with other folks. I'm glad the website is still up and available after his passing. Happy reading...
