The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Before everyone leaves for the show, I have a few questions.
Yesterday Dh, a few friends, and I processed a handful of my RIR roos. They looked great. One person brought up the topic of caponizing roosters.
Does anyone on here do that? If so how do you choose which roosters? Also what is the best age to do it?

I'm so happy I found your page. My wife and I have been trying to figure out what kind of chickens we were given and did not know until today. The feed stores didn't know. The local fair breeders didn't know. Then BAM we found you. We were given 8 Heritage RI Reds with the rooster about 6 mos. ago. They don't produce much but we're trying to improve things. I will post some pics.

They do not look like RIRs to me--They look black with red at the neck. The Rooster is some type of Crele.

Sorry but the rooster is not a RIR. The females look black and not mahogany red. They remind me more of a F1 Welbar ... females are black with some color in the neck and the male
comes out barred like this male. So I am guessing that they are a black sex-link of some kind. So many feed store have employees that do not have a clue as to what they are selling. Often they give miss leading information. LOL Heard one tell a customer that if you hang the chick upside down and it flips it wings it is a male and if it doesn't it is a female. They were really a sex-link chick so I pulled the person off to the side and told them do not get the white chick get the red if you want females.

Here's a great example of a really mad cockerel. He says baths and cages are for sissys and the ONLY thing fun about going to a show is having cute girls in the adjoining hotel rooms. ;-)
