The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I have often thought of getting the whites to make a RSL. I opted instead for a pair of barred rocks for the BSL just because the barred rocks were so easy to obtain.
Hi Sally,
Personally I think you will be more satisfied with the BSL over the RSL. I've had both and I like the B's better. They are larger if you decide to butcher any of them. I still have one old girl that is coming 5 years old and is still laying. My blacks also seemed to be a little tamer though both are very easy going. If I were looking for laying hens again (strictly egg production) I would order me some because they sure do lay and monster sized eggs. Mine did come from hatchery, I did not breed my own.

Finally was able to get me a trio of these wonderful birds we all love so much. How do these birds look to you guys? Good and bad comments welcome.

Hate to be negative but you ask for good or bad comments. Love the color, hens appear to have really nice wide heads but the cockerel in pictures 2 & 4 appears to have a little roach in his back. Maybe just the pictures and if so then please forgive me for saying this. This is a problem I had with a one of the lines that I've worked with but think I have that ironed out now.
Still nice looking birds.

LOL Don't know what happened to picture 4 on here.

We just processed our RSL males from last spring/summer hatch and they dressed out very nice. We also did some RIW's and the RSL was a bit nicer but I can't keep all of the males. I have had hatchery RSL too and they were great layers of nice large eggs. I have some older gals too that still lay. I may only get 2 or 3 eggs a week from them but they are nice big eggs. My SC RIR/SC RIW crosses have done very well to at laying. I would like to cross RC RIR/RC RIW just as an experiment for a RC RSL..

Quote: I mainly hatch the sex links for others. They sell well since I can say for sure it is a girl. The roos get butchered out or sold to people I "just know" plan to butcher them out. My location is perfect for selling started chicks and pullets to city people wanting a quick start in chickens. I even get a few buyers that just don't like little chicks.

But for my layers, I really do like these reds, just so much good about them from their looks to their size to their personalities.

I only have a few of the mixed breeds but they are slowly dying off from old age. In another year or so I will have nothing but these real red's. Gotta love these Bing Cherry Red's as my old friend Bob always called that color that we so much desire. lol Whatever you all do, have fun doing it. ha,ha

The pair I got from Matt the hen started laying a week or so ago. Was quit surprised that I got an egg from her 3 days in a row. Usually its every other day with her.

Not much has been going on here lately. Hope everyone is doing good. I recently got a nice cockerel from Matt. He is now in with his girls and doing very well. Been having eggs for breakfast and baking, checking the eggs for fertility, so far so good. I won't be filling the incubator for about another month. I'm still working on the coops and moving birds around. Right now renovating the chick/grow-out coop. Going to put the cockerels I have left from last years hatch in there temporarily. Need their coop and pen for breeding because it has nest boxes. Most of the RIR boys have been sold and I'm keeping one as a spare so if something happens to one of the other boys. He will go into one of the general population pens that has a mix of breeds that I keep just for my egg sales. Just processed the Sex-Link and extra RIW males from last years hatch. Since I show my birds I want to keep only the best. Good luck to everyone and have fun...
