The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Fred, that was great. I did learn something too. A few years ago I sent Bob a picture of a chick I hatched out that really stood out to me. The parent stock came from Matt. Bob answered me back and pointed out some good characteristics and suggested I name the chick "Hollywood". I did and the chick was developing very nicely. Sadly one morning I went out to the chick coop and found 14 dead chicks. One of the dead chicks was Hollywood. From the video now I know about Bob's Hollywood.

Thank you for the link to Bob's video Fred. I've been keeping up with the thread and learning silently for the past few months but had to thank you for this. It was very educational to see the birds walking around and hearing what Bob was looking for in his birds to make the cut to the breeding pen. There were many great pieces of advice for a beginner like me to be sure to note and store in the memory for selection of quality birds. One thing that peaked my interest was what he referred to as the "Hollywood gene". Is this a line that has since disappeared or just a trait that he tried to get in some of his birds? Also heard the mention of "High Stepper" in the video that I have read in many of Bob's posts and I think I read it on his page also but not positive. This must have been one amazing bird for him to refer to that one so much.
I did finally get my SOP from the APA and have been using it to try and evaluate what I see on the forum. I evaluate and then see what everyone else has to say. I admit that I still have a ways to go, but I will get better once I have my own to watch every day. I know that I will need the expertise of everyone here when it comes to my first year breeding selections and I will be sure to have alot of pics to share. Thank you again for sharing.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Our daughter some years ago moved to a place where she couldn't have pets so we inherited her walker hound. She (Daisy) never bothered the chickens and we never had any predators when she was alive. She lived a nice long life. I'm too old now for another dog. I would probably get a puppy to train but it would probably out live me. I have had several dogs in my life. We are in our 70's now.
Thanks. I hope so. Can't beat a good Hound.

Robert "Bob" Blosl

Some of the folks who read on this thread and maybe now post on this thread never had the chance to interact with it's creator, Bob Blosl. Bob started this thread to do what Bob did best. Promote Rhode Island Reds. No, no, not from the hatchery, Bob called those "rusty scrub birds". True bred, real, honest to goodness, breeder preserved and maintained Reds. Bob had a special gift for promoting this breed.

Sadly, Bob was taken from us far too early, having passed from this life to the next when he went home to be with the Lord a couple of years ago. It saddened a lot of people who got to "know" Bob through this thread, through his mangled syntax and endless story telling. In his honor, some of his old, self narrated video has been posted to various Red's club sites and posted on YouTube. If you never had the chance to actually hear him talk or visit with him, I believe you'll enjoy spending 40 minutes watching Bob describe bird after bird at his place in Southern Alabama in 1993. So, from 25 years ago comes Bob's voice as he walks around among his Reds at that time. Enjoy. Just click on the link below.

That video was great. After reading Bob's posts, the video adds a whole new element.; walking around with him, listening to him talk about his birds. It's nice.

Thanks for sharing. Who was the original video made for?

Must've been a special chick. Sorry you lost it. Awesome story to have, though, as far as what Bob said.

I watched the video and wrote my post before refreshing the page to learn that "Hollywood" was a particular bird and not a line or strain. Thanks for clearing that up cmom.

Video was made for Dennis Myers

Isn't that something? I thought I kept hearing "Dennis". Our human chicks were chirping pretty loudly here when we were trying to watch.

I couldn't figure out if he was growing birds out for Dennis or already had Dennis's birds and was breeding them.

That's really amazing. I've decided to add this little piece of history to my daughter's lessons this week. We're going to watch it again and I'm going to have her do some research and write up a report about the lines, their origins and the people involved, as well as what remains today. I'm excited. . . hope she will be too. lol

Quote: The video was made for Dennis Myers any anyone else he wanted to have it. I am so glad Fred shared it with all of us. I think Bob was an awesome person. He was really passionate about the birds. He also inspired me to join the Rhode Island Red Club of America.

Just a couple shots taken this evening of my project birds. I am kind of pleased. These are 17 weeks today. Last picture shows the yellow/horn on these guys. Feather quality is not the greatest right now, they are going through their juvenile molt. LOL
