The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

This beginner is checking in with new pic's of my Ron Fogle chicks. I still have eleven of the shipped chicks and eleven of the hatched egg chicks. They sure do like their groceries! Good golly they do like to eat!

Sure is easy to tell the old reds from the production chicks. I run them together. Thirty chicks and they are following me around wanting to eat all the time. Hah!

The shipped chicks are quite a bit heads and shoulders above the rest but they all get a long. Quite a congenial group.

I like this guy.

I think this is a guy too. I like him as well.

Could not get a decent picture of any of the girls. They are really stocky chunks of goodness. This girl looks poofy and round but really isn't.

Same with this girl. Not sure why the cushion is so pronounced.

Love these chickens. Loving the fact I have twenty two to choose from for my final pen.

I butchered four production red cockerels this morning. A perfect use for them. YUM!

To Mumsy: Your dark reds are good looking birds...Your "Production Reds" are obviously about one third the age of the Reds..It must be torture watching the big guys eat and have to stand aside as is clear from the picture..Also, a few of the Reds look lethargic and anemic...Is this usual for this strain?

Yes. The Production chicks have just about finished feathering out. They are four weeks old. Doing pretty well keeping up with the big kids free ranging all day and put up in the barn every night.

The next batch are the hatched Reds. About six weeks old. The oldest and largest Reds hatched March 9 and were sent to me when about three weeks old. They are just about nine weeks old.
I took the pictures tonight in bright light around 5pm. They just finished gorging themselves on fermented Turkey Game bird grower. They get all they can eat morning, noon, and night and free range the gardens and yard all day. They act like normal chickens. For nine week old chicks, I think they look and act normal. I've never raised this strain before nor any other old Red strain. I've got no experience to compare them to.

Can you please explain to Mumsy what you mean by "lethargic and anemic"?

You seem to have the keen ability to see these traits from a few still pictures.

Well, I joined the club today. Thanks Terry for sending me the newsletter. Good read on Mr Kittle. Thanks for writing it.

Well... I've been toying with joining and have spent quite a bit of time on the web site, but it appeared to have not been updated in so long I assumed it was a very inactive group.
Can someone tell me otherwise? Their website is not overly "promotional"...

When these birds get some age on them, (8-10 months) your going to suddenly see them bloom like a beautiful flower.

Mumsy, I have not seen any of my birds from this year with a cushion like that. Hopefully it will molt out, if not you got a bunch to select from.

Its time to join and time to change the future of this club. It needs go getters like you folks on this board to support it and its cause.

I got a email last night I have a friend who has some Mohawk Started Chicks to share with someone who wants them. He has ten of them postage and shipping box and they are yours first come first serve. Send me a private message if you want some old fashion dark birds. When this is over he wont have anything till next year.

I would get them but my wife would kill me.

Nice pictures of your young reds. I saw a nice ckl in the shot.

I like this guy.

Of course you do!! OK, if you don't like this guy, you just don't like cockerels.

Eye popping. I got his little twin brother up here. I mean as soon as he dried, from day 2 he stuck out, head 'n shoulder above the others. When you see this type in the brooder? You know Ron has done a great job with these birds.
