The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hello! I found 'mumsy' s page and sent her a note. She's probably so busy with her new flock, she has no time to reply. If anyone DOES have extras, please let me know what it would cost to ship them once it cools down in the fall. It's plenty cool here in Port Hadlock WA, but if you are in AL or something, well.

Thanks all! Sure wish I'd discovered these sooner this year, will be making do with 'productions'.

:) Aleta G.
Hello AletaG. Yep. I'm outside with the flock and tending to the vegetable garden this time of year. I know exactly where Port Hadlock is. Your a ferry ride away from me. I'll get in touch with you about a couple cockerels.

Thanks! I'll just have to let those boys play games with the production RIR's until I can get some hens. Urch's responded and they are out until January. If I can't find some ladies before then, sheesh.

I have all seventeen HRIR cockerels running together free range every day. There is seldom to slim sparring between them. Such good boys. They run together in a yard with eighteen Silkies and a flock of barnyard layers. I pen all in separate pens in the barn at night and they all run together days. They all stay in separate flocks and get a long. Nothing but normal pecking order between all sixty birds in the flock. There is no more beautiful sight in my eyes than those seventeen male reds galloping across the lawn like so many Sumo wrestlers! I penned the five pullets alone so they could eat and grow in peace. There was no bullying between the sexes but the girls were not getting the groceries they needed while running with the big boys.
I like that you and I are nearly neighbors across the pond. Keeping this bloodline local will help us both down the road.

In need of the Genetic Code that a fellow posted on this tread many months ago. If some one could back track and find it.

I wrote a article for the English Rhode Island Red Club year book on a Beginners Guide to R I Red Color and would love to put it in the article for the fun of it. There may be someone who may like to see it. Let me know or post it on the tread below. Thanks. bob

Of the 20 Underwoods I have I "think" it's about a 50/50 split ... so about 10 cockerels and about 10 pullets.
My rhodebars I hatched are only 1 pullet to 6 cockerels, but... for what I'm wanting to do with them that works out ok...

Trying to figure out how long to feed an extra 7-8 cockerels though.
I know a year would be good, but...

That is an amazing ratio of males to females. I am exactly opposite on my chicks, short on cockerels. Have not heard from everyone else, but I know Anthony ended up with 8 pullets 2 cockerels.

You will be able to raise A Lot of chicks off 3-5 hens and 2-3 males.

Ron
As long as nothing happens to the cockerels before next years breeding that is perfect for me. Now my 25 Heritage Delawares I got, I will be lucky to have 3 hens. So go figure.
