The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Ron, I use the Horizon Single Nest as well. I have shipped many batches of 20 chicks that were 2 weeks old in these boxes but when it gets warmer...May-June I quit shipping because you can lose some to heat.

I quit in May also.
Its good to know that more than 10 will do ok.

Thanks
Ron

Rose Marie did not know you had these boys. I know them well. I see their parents every two or three months and these are my old line from the past.

Like this guy legs dead center flat back take good care of them. You have a contrast of two worlds to study. I enjoyed raising my commercial females 24 years ago to compare them to my old dark birds. I took their fast feathering traits and how they grew their feathers and tried to apply it to the old Reese line. Look forward to your pictures of all your birds and try to attend the show in Jackson this fall. I plan to be there and there should be some nice Rhode Island Reds to look at then we can have a clinic on what you want to look for in your young birds and who should be breeders for next year. Look forward to meeting all of you there. bob
HUH? I'm totally confused.

This pic above isn't my chickens. Are you saying these came from yours? Contrast of two worlds to study? Can you explain? I am totally new to this, totally so I am lost here.

So what is the difference between commercial and old dark birds?
OH I do take good care of mine. They are spoiled rotten...... lol. Like I said they are only 4 months old now and look like grown chickens. I am feeding them the fermented food. Haven't had any trouble with them at all. Just as docile as they can be so far. They are by far my favorite breed but have only had these BA's and the RIR's.

Very nicely put. It makes most of the sellers feel pretty good when the folks buying their birds are satisfied with what they got. Now you got to watch for to many toes on those birds but other then that they should be okay. "Hey,, I'm just kidding with you." I'm glad you got some of these good red's to start your venture. The fun has just begun. I'm also glad that you enjoy this forum. There is more information on this thread then any of us could absorb with one reading. The copy, paste and save feature on your computer will be very valuable. Some that you think is really important to you should even be printed out just in case you have a computer crash. Or save it to an external hard drive. lol I learned this from experience. lol You bought from a good guy. lol Hey Steven, I'll be watching for my pay pal payment to come in. ha,ha,ha
Welcome to BYC.

Man, you had me bracing when you talked about too many toes for a second. I was like "what?" But I have looked for board stretchers before and called by the "Game Warden" to immediately report the the magistrates office so Im getting better at that hahaha. Remember what goes around... Steven should pay you too, he's got all the money..:)

Yep I do remember you saying that. Still your story and you're sticking to it right?? haha. Just checking to see if you were paying attention! Good Job! I need to work on that watering system. Do you know about that collection and deep water pan idea? I looked at a couple of mail order suppliers but did not see anything that looked practical.

I don't know anything about it.
