The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

These are a few of my project birds that I'm working on. These are just a little over 11 weeks. Hoping they turn out super. This is just the first step. It will take a few years before I'm finished with them. LOL Had a coon take two of these before I caught and killed him a couple of nights ago. Still setting trap and nothing since so maybe there was just the one. Will be keeping the trap set.
Thanks Sally, I really am a little pumped with these so far. Only time will tell.

Your birds are beautiful. Your birds are a little older than mine. I hope mine will look as good as yours do.

Tracks in some sand just inside my barn. I think they are either from a cat or possum but am leaning towards possum because I have found some spots around the fences where something has been digging. I put my game camera out. Maybe something will show up on the video. I have electric around all of the pens and coops so I think what ever has been digging has gotten zapped. I did get a couple of snakes. They climbed up the fence and got electrocuted.

I would like breed to improve the quality of the birds, which I would sell locally. I do show birds at our small county fair, which I'm sure over 90% of the birds are from a hatchery, so there isn't much competition. A few years ago my Easter Egger won grand champion! Also, about the roach back, in those pictures his back looks strange! I took some better pictures that more correctly show his color and type. One more thing, his comb appears to have more defined points than most other rose combs I have seen. Is this considered less correct than "smoother" rose combs? The standard says that the surface area should be covered with small rounded points. Is my boy's points considered small?

Go to these two links and you will see pictures of my Underwood birds from hatch to grown ups. Please don't think that I am saying that mine are right and yours are wrong but Gary Underwood has been raising them for a really long time. This may just help you in your work with them. There are quite a few folks on here that have the RC's that may be able to help you but this is just what I thought may help you out a little.
Lots of information on the reds both SC and RC on my site. Web page address is at the bottom of all my posts.
Hope this helps a little.

Thanks, I will be studying these for a while :)

When you hatch does incubator tend to stay above or below 99.5 degrees? One explanation for the high percentage of males is that your temps run on the lower range which leads to higher female mortality during incubation.. I usually run mine on the higher side which leads to higher male mortality. I usually have more hens... Just a theory I came across

High heat would have to be very high--like 102. It would cause females to die too.

It is more likely that you have hens that are laying more eggs that have female embryos.
