The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

If the chicks aren't stuck you could put them in the incubator with plenty of wet sponges to bring up the humidity and mist the eggs especially where the chick has started to zip. Don't worry about how high the humidity goes up it will come back down. I have done this with good success. I am careful when I mist around the area zipped and sometimes I take a moist Q-tip and wet the area. If the chick had pipped but not zipped just wet the area where the pip is. If the chick appears stuck then you may need to help but sometimes when the chick had pipped but has not started zipping just be careful if you assist and watch for blood and if you see any stop and just apply some moisture. Also wrapping the egg in a moist paper towel can help. Good luck and hope all turns out well...

Thanks for your advice, cmom, it helped greatly. :)

I was mistaken in my previous post; there were six eggs, not seven.
One chick pipped three days early - the day I asked for help - but we left her in the egg to absorb the sac. She and the other RIR pullet who made it are both happy and healthy, although we did have to assist them both. I'll try to get pictures up later.

I did an eggtopsy on one of other four, which appeared to have died from the heat prior to putting them in the incubator. I assume the same thing happened to the other three; there was no indication of life when we candled them last night. Nothing we could have done, unfortunately.

I wanted to raise some breeds that were in need of resurrection so decided on the Pure Heritage Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. The Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites are the only RIW's recognized by the American Poultry Association and I like to show my birds at poultry shows. I bought my first birds many years ago and been very happy with them. I have added a few birds over the years from the same lines. My goal is to keep them pure. The first post of this thread is a good read too.

Do you have any RIW pullets for sale. I saw on your website that you would be selling pairs of RIR this fall, are they available yet. I have Heritage RIR off of the Underwood line but i prefer the thickness of the Reese line and their combs. Hope you have some left...

I will have some birds available but it won't be for awhile. I want them to develop more so I can pick the pullets and cockerels I would considering showing.

My first Heritage RIR's were from a breeder here in Florida. They were from the Reese line. A few years later I aquired a quad from a BYC member from Alabama from the same line, Reese. What I noticed was my Florida birds were nice looking birds but didn't have the width (thickness) along their backs to their tails that the Alabama birds did. I no longer have any birds from the Florida breeder. I got another young male from my Alabama friend so I could continue to line breed and not in-breed. I am anxious to see how the chicks turn out. I have banded them to keep them straight so I can also keep track of their growth. Another male is a son from the quad came originally from Alabama. This male did win a Championship at a show and a sister also won a Champion. His brother won a Champion at another show. I have been working with these breeds for several years now and now it is showing at the shows. The best my RC RIW's have done at shows are Best of Breed but I'm still working with them too.

These are pictures of mine that I acquired from the Underwood Line. I really love their color but their combs need work. I really like the hens. These were hatched in January 2015 so they are still young. I was thinking If could get a rooster and maybe 2 hens to get them closer to what they should be. I'm in Tallahassee. The first one is the sire that I don't own. Any comments or recommendations about my project is appreciated.

I was talking to CMom, they are about 3 .5 hours away. What do to think of my young birds?

The pictures are a bit fuzzy or the chickens look to be on the move in the pictures you posted. I have to say they look so much better than hatchery production lines. But I could not choose a best of the bunch or even point of their great qualities because on my computer the birds are a tad fuzzy.

I been working out of town last few years but now took a job close to home .. (Ellijay Ga.)Time to fill the coops up going to start looking in a week or two for some chicks maybe young birds so keep me in mind if you hatch some extra and live not to far from ellijay
