The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I did pretty well at the show. My birds got Best of and Reserve. No champions this go around. Most of my birds are in molt, some heavy and some light. It's hard to find any that aren't molting in some stage. I'm still happy as I did better than I thought I would.

“Alright good show ... So did you get any photos of your birds ????”
No, I didn't get any photos. I had sale birds outside because they weren't allowing sales birds inside unless you rented the sale cages and I had a lot of birds so I stayed most of the time outside and every once in awhile went inside to check on my birds. As soon as the judging was over I grabbed up my birds and left. There was so much going on I didn't stick around. I usually am one of the last to leave but this time I was one of the first. I did sell most of my Reds, but none of my RIWs.

I am in love with that setup! It is AMAZING! Especially if you want to separate different breeds or hatches. I am curious how you have them heated-do you have a flat type heater like a sweeter heater mounted flush to the top of each section? Or are they heated some other way?

I use light bulbs. They are mounted more to one side.

Thanks for all the different views of it! Its a really cool setup. I like how it has wheels so you can easily move it around. Is that just a multiple tiered bird cage that you use?

I bought it at a yard sale several years ago. It may have been originally built for that but was just shelves and I put the wire on it and over each shelf with the red trays I put pine shavings in for the poop and it makes it easier to clean the trays when I change the poopy shavings. For the first couple of days I put paper towel over the wire until the chicks find their legs. For the first day they walk like little penguins.

What a great setup. I just use a dog house attached to a metal carrying crate

They go from the tower to a grow-out coop and pen.
the

I divided the coop into 2 sections. Each section has a pop door and a pen. After they grow out somewhat then they get moved out to one of the outer coops and pens

They get to free range too

We had a poultry show yesterday and the same fellow showed up. After he came to my house that one day, he showed up at a swap I was at that following Saturday and again was trying to buy birds from me for practically nothing and again I told him NO. At the show he did ignore me but I did get kind of rude with him on the other occasions.
I get a few of these kinds of customers every so often. There is always the call from some cheapskate wanting a hen for $5 when I sell then for $25 or more. The cheapskate says well they sell them for $5 at the swap meets. So go there I say. Its not long before they must think I'm rude. But really I don't see any heritage RIR chicks selling for much less than $8 and typically its closer to $10 plus shipping. So $25 to $30 for my pet quality RIR birds is a great deal.

But the set of questions I hate getting the most are: What do you do with the birds that you don't want and can't sell such as roosters? and How many birds do you have? Its never how many do you have for sell its always how many do you have end of question.

I hear you loud and clear. I get asked those questions too. Currently I have close to 300 birds. I have been selling a few. I was up to around 400 but have sold close to 100. Some of the birds I have bartered with the feed store where I get my feed, feed for birds. I give them a good deal but their customers are just looking for layers so many of the ones that I won't be using for my breeding program get bartered and it helps me out with the feed bill. I also barter my cockerels that I'm not going to use for breeding or not really show quality. I have been carefully selecting the best for my breeding pens over the years. I have a few that will go into my general population coop and pen but a lot of them will go into breeding pens. I do have to sell some cockerels. Many of the boys are very nice and have good show potential so I would rather take them to a show to sell. I did fairly well at the show selling some pairs and some cockerels. I got my prices. People are more apt to pay well at a show especially if they know they are getting good birds and they have good potential for show or breeding.
