The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Anxious to see the new chicks. I like what I see so far. I converted the bachelor pens to breeding pens. Eventually they will be bachelor coops and pens again. The grow-out coops are being used as breeding coops. I sorted pullets among those coops. These are my first and test hatch of those coops. I have some pips.

5 viable eggs out of 14? As bad as that sounds, it's a whole lot better than the 2 out of 30 with my last batch of shipped eggs. I hope all of them make it out of the shells okay. If they do, you'll likely wind up with 3 males and 2 females. Just a hunch...

I've only got 17 chicks in the brooders so far, but if most of the 44 eggs now in the incubator will hatch, I should be close to my target of 60 chicks. I'm realistic and know not all of them will hatch, so I'll collect eggs for the rest of this week just to be sure. This should give me plenty to choose from for next year's breeders. I know these breeders will be happy to move back into their large coop and big runs.

From what I hear from shipped eggs 5/14 isn't too bad. When you see how some of these postal workers handle packages it starts to make sense....

I ordered a dozen from Dick Horstman and 10 of 12 hatched. 2 of the 3 Pencil Rocks he sent as extras hatched as well so 12 of 15 total.
Eggs went from PA to Maine...
A few years ago I got some Rose Comb LF RIR eggs from Dick. (PA to FL). He sent 15 eggs and only 3 hatched. I fell good though as the three that hatched were 1 male and 2 females.

Just welcomed 2 day-old RIRs yesterday (and 2 PRs)! They are so intelligent and curious so far. They came from the Heritage Chicken Program at the University of Alberta. Everyone is settling in well :)
