That sounds like it would set it back, not help it.

It helps, unless you're breeding for low GP. When the horse stops gaining skills, that means its skills are as high as possible which results in offspring with higher potential.

This thread is the best, I got a 1% rare filly reserved for me by a friend, I'm reserving 4 of my horses i don't want anymore for a friend, it makes the game so much easier.
