You don't need a groom yet. Grooms are pretty much useless for small ECs.

You click the + button next to the meadow you want to use, then click "grow crops".

Ok started over. Now I have 5 large fields growing wheat.

You can plant more than one type of plant, but you can only plant one type per meadow.
