It's frustrating coz you can only train so much in one day or your horse like collapses on you, but you get there eventually! Enter some contests. That'll also increase the skills.

I can't seem to get my mare's health up...

Nope I don't, all my starters were Purebred Spanish and the game gave me a couple of Irish Hunters. You should buy one, the auctions seem to be updated pretty often.

OK, I don't know if you can trade at 4 days though, I have a sneaking suspicion it might be 10.

(I really want another philosopher's stone. )

When health is low, that usually means you aren't feeding the correct amount or are putting the horse to bed with less than 20% energy. It can be tricky to get those things right at first.

Yea, I keep overfeeding my horses to try get their energy up to 20%. This is not always successful

But hey, I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Yea, I usually have my horses in bed by 22:00 (any later and its health goes down because it hasn't had enough sleep.)
Are you riding a lot? Riding uses a lot of energy and doesn't increase skills by much. I don't do it very often.
