You could just shake some out of the container...that way you can avoid contact. Or get a scoop to get them out. I'm a fisherwoman so no bug grosses me out. But when I was little it bothered me. You'd be surprised what you can get over...and hey...they're dead.

(i would just wipe my foot on the grass and keep on going)

I would rather play with a tarantula than stick my hand in a bag of crunchy worms...I guess for me the crunch just makes it so gross..not sure why.

lol.. kinda like potato chips?.. can't stop with just one!
At a "local" gift shop they have candy with mealworms in it.. and some BBQ'ed mealworms that are supposed to be "extra spicy and crunchy".. I've told my husband a few times I need to send some to his eccentric relatives.. and see if they ask for more.. I have to draw the line at tasting them myself... I know there are bugs in orange juice and a lot of other processed foods.. and I know i have eaten my share... but yeah... it's a bit different when they sell them as snack food for people!
Just a friendly warning... The other day my husband walked into the coop with a large plastic container of dried mealworms to give the girls a treat. They mugged him flying up to grab the worms and he dropped the entire container of mealworms. I think it was all planned!
When I looked, he was on his hands and knees picking up as many of those expensive dried mealworms as the chickens were literally riding his back! What a sight!
If only I could get my camera fast enough! LOL. Now he is talking of starting a three drawer system to raise the mealworms since 13 chickens all love the treat. We have them trained... er.. or they have trained US to shake the red bag to feed them treats to get them back into the coop after letting them out to run!
When ever I walk out into the chicken yard carrying anything they come. They think it is food.
Every time you go out take food, even if it is a handful of scratch. They will come to you.
Mine go nuts over spaghetti. In the winter on very cold mornings I make them oatmeal and add any leftovers from supper the night before and some scratch. I get a 50# bag of steam rolled oats at the feed store for $15 and it lasts all winter.
