In your opinion what would be the ideal flock for you? What breed and how many? I dont have enough expierience to know what breeds I like I can speculate forever. So ia m not really sure.

I like mixed flocks for variety of eggs and the looks of the birds. See my signature for my little mixed flock.

Our weather is probably pretty similar, and all of my birds did well over the winter (although they did stay inside quite a bit by choice...the pop door was always opened for them during the day).

I love a mixed flock. Currently I have 5 Buff orps, 8 RIR, 5 SLW, 1 GLW rooster,1 White Leghorn and 1 white rock. I have 6 Barred rocks and 6 ameracuna(sp) coming mid May.
Holy crap I got to get busy building the 3rd coop

My ideal egg-laying flock would be 4 salmon faverolles (3 hens, 1 roo), 4 silver dorkings (3 hens, 1 roo), 3 EE's, 3 red cochins, 3 welsummers, 3 buff-laced polish, and 3 of a brown egg laying breed.

I would like to have a whole bunch of flocks.

My ideal flock would be THREE flocks of hybrid traditional layers, like RIR's, Wyandottes, Rocks, etc.

Flock ONE would be a production flock intended solely for egg output. They would be selectively culled through the season and only the best layers retained, the n'est plus ultra of layers.
Flock TWO would be a breeding flock comprised of the previous years best layers and the required cockerels.

Flock THREE would be a periodic flock of surplus males, reared for slaughter at 12 weeks.

As it is, any flock is currently 'ideal' for me, since I am unable to have more than one or two birds.

I'm not going to put exact numbers, but these are the breeds. For each breed I'll probably have 1-4 roosters.

various Araucanas
bbs, sliver, buff, wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucanas
black copper & blue wheaten Marans
lemon pyle, light, buff, dark, partridge Brahmas
Tolbunt Polish
various Shamos
Malgache
various Olive Eggers

I already have most of these.

- The only ones I don't have and probably won't for a while are most of the Brahma colors, the Shamos, and Malgache.
