The Incubators Thread!!! Come Join And Learn!!!

Hi Chelsea,

I dont think eggs that have been in the fridge can be incubated... I think the coldness kills the embryo. Is this right @RavynFallen

Don't worry we all make mistakes and we just have to learn from them. If none hatch this time try again until you do!

Well, they all at least STARTED growing until day 11. So im not really sure what went wrong.
I keep my chickens at my moms house, and she didnt believe me that eggs can sit out at room temp for a week and be okay so she put them in the fridge until i went and picked them up. I have 4 of the 5 that are in my bator right now werent refrigerated (hopefully)
So i guess its all part of the learning process

Haha mums! If it wasnt in there for too long it would have survived! What day for that first egg again?

has anyone ever seen this before? I am pretty sure this egg is dead, along with 4 others in my incubator. I was going to leave them to makensure, but in worried it might be bacteria that could harm my other eggs? Im not sure. But im sad. I just cleaned my incubator and thermometer and water cups with vinigar (hope thats okay to use) and im hoping for the best. I have one due on the 18th, and i need that one to live! Im down to 5 eggs out of 12. And 4 still have a long way to go.

Could it be because they were stored in the fridge?

If anyone has any advice. It would be very much appreciated.

I have 9 in my 2nd group that are due for hatching on the 17th, and they don't look like that one. Please don't give up on any that still might be looking good though. I don't think that you can hatch refrigerated eggs, though. I think that they have to be kept at a certain warmer temp, and I don't wash mine before putting them in the incubator. That way they have the mothers protective "bloom" on them.

My first egg was due on friday, but i dont think its made it :( i think it got to day 16. I was going to leave it just in case. But air sac hasnt grown, no embryo growth, and no movement. I traced where the baby was and it hasnt even changed position. So i was thinking of doing an eggtopsy, but i may wait until saturday just in case

Yeah i figured it shouldnt look like this and if it does its probably dead. So i am going to take it out. One of my others look like its starting to get that too on the inside (one im pretty sure died yesterday) so im assuming bacteria from the fridge maybe? I guess i will try next time with diffrently stored eggs

What incubator are you using?

A homemade one. Styrofoam cooler with a light bulb. Folded chicken wire to raise the eggs above the bottoms, and then cabinet liner over the wire. I figured after a hatch or 2, i could save enough money to get a better one

great idea. What are you using to heat it? A heating element?
