Chapter 1
With one last stroke, Shy Fawn finished peeling potatoes for supper. She threw the potato into the pot, put her knife aside, and rushed outside. “Freedom!” she sighed. She looked around the campsite and saw Red Rose playing with her corn shuck doll. She walked over to her little sister. “hau (hello) Red Rose! What do you say we go pick wild flowers?” Shy Fawn suggested. “Oh yes!” Red Rose jumped up. “Be good now!” she told her doll. Taking Shy Fawn’s hand she started skipping away. “Wait a minute.” Red Rose stopped. “How are we gonna get to the meadow? It’s a long way to walk.” Shy Fawn smiled and said, “I got that figured out. How about taking raindrop?” Red Rose squealed, “Really?” Shy Fawn laughed and nodded. They walked off to where the horses were. They didn’t notice Crow Feather and Running Bull poke their heads out of the bushes. They look at each other. “You thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’?” Crow Feather grinned. Running Bull grinned. “I’m thinkin’ so.” Coming behind their sisters, they jumped on their own speedy steeds. Ahead of the scheming boys, the girls had a fine time on raindrop, an old mare perfect for little Red Rose. Once in the meadow, they slid off the mares back; they started picking a bouquet of multicolored wild flowers. All was quiet until- “A OOOOOOOO!” A war cry split the air. “Shy Fawn! Who is it!” Red Rose cried and ran to her sister. Startled herself, Shy Fawn dragged Red Rose to the horse. “ride into camp, and tell Ahte (ah- tay, father).” Shy Fawn was about to set raindrop for home when Running Bull and Crow Feather galloped through the clearing, laughing hysterically. Frowning Shy Fawn said sternly, “istelya! (shame on you)! Scaring rose like that.” Crow Feather pretended to be hurt. “We just wanted some fun!” Shy Fawn bent down and picked up a stick. “If you want a war, you have a war!” she threw the stick playfully like an arrow. Crow Feather yelped and dodged it. “Your on!” the boys scrambled behind a boulder. Red Rose hid behind another. Shy fawn grabbed a handful of sticks and joined her sister. “this is your wahin kpe (wahee pay- arrow).” She pulled a clump of long grass and wrapped it around the end. “this is your arrow head. make sure to hit with this end.” Red Rose frowned. “won’t it hurt da boys?” Shy Fawn smiled. “no. the grass will cushion it.” THWUMP! An “arrow” hit the ground near the girls. It was followed by two more. “I think the boys are impatient.” Red Rose said soberly. Shy Fawn agreed. Crow Feather picked up another arrow. “keep the coming Running Bull!” Crow Feather said to his brother, who was wrapping grass around sticks. “Why don’t you make them! It’s my turn to throw!” Running Bull grumbled. “ han (ok) han!” they switched quickly. When their supply of sticks vanished, they jumped out and shouted war cries. The girls followed suit, charging the boys. They were about to meet when—“ just what do you think you’re doing!” they froze. A party of 10 braves rode in, incluing…Jesto! “It appears no rival Indians invading. Just four kids in a heap of wosice. (who she say- trouble!)” Jesto glared at his younger siblings.
