Welcome home Marvin, Wanda, Gladys and Katherine. (Named after Marvin Gaye and the Marvelettes, you can tell I like older music.)
Katherine is the smallest (front of picture), Gladys has the blonde eye shadow (looking at the camera and most likely pooping in the water) and Wanda is at the back. Marvin does a very nice, protective quacking when I go in but he seems very gentle so far. His feathers
are quite raggedy and I'm hoping with better living conditions that they will all fill out and feel better soon.
Their coop looks pretty bare but I'm trying to give them enough space since they will be locked in for a bit. So I haven't put any bucket nests down yet or much of anything besides bedding, food and water. I sprinkled a thick layer of DE (managed to get a fair bit on the walls in the process, LOL) before I put down their bedding. I'm not sure if they have any lice because of the previous conditions.
Could they have internal parasites? Should I treat them with anything?
My new babies!! Getting used to their night house and awaiting the supplies to finish and extend the pen with a pond and enclose it with hardware wire(I have fish line tied on top of the pen for the hawk protection). They aren't in the pen without supervision and in the brooder inside at night, I'm an overprotective duck mom.![]()
Congratulations! So cute! They grow up fast, so don't forget to take lots of pictures while they're little!
I'm so happy they're doing well!New food and water containers, ready to go into the coop this morning.
Even after all the stress of moving I found this lovely gift when I opened the door. Guess I need to sort out some laying boxes quicker than I thought, LOL..
Food's all gone and water's emptied into bedding .. of course ... what else would be expected from ducks?
Checking out the new stuff. I'm concerned the holes are not big enough for them to fit their heads through (and after posting the pictures I am suddenly worried they may get their heads stuck under those handles I left on .. I have to go back out and take those off pronto). I'll listen for water noises and that way I'll know if they can get in through the water and food holes.
After a better look at Marvin this morning I think he has an eye infection and not caruncles like I originally thought (if he happened to be a mix breed). Will call the local vet this morning and ask her what we should do. She has ducks and geese so I'm confident she'll have the knowledge to help. I'm hoping that just being able to rinse his head and eyes in clean water might help clear that up.
I'm happy with the coop this morning. When I cleaned it out to get it ready for the ducks I took down the roosts and poop shoot and underneath it all I found hidden, a fully cemented and tiled shower stall (you can see the short wall of it sticking up out of their bedding). The man who originally developed this housing area owned and lived in our house and I think he built the garden shed with a shower because he was living in that while the house(s) were being built. Anyway .. it has managed to come in really handy because it kept their water mess contained and 1/2 their bedding is still nice and dry (even if a little poopy). Once they're out ranging I may stop putting bedding in that 1/2 and just let them make all the mess they want because the water will just drain away and I can hose it out daily.
That's all the news from Marvin and Marvelettes this morning!
Is there plans for these buckets you have made up? I just put my 2 month old KC's under the chicken hutch which I wired wire hardware cloth. Now instead of feed fines in the water I have dirt they are eating and then sifting I guess. Makes a mess and the ground is a mud hole now. Do the ducks tend to keep their heads in the waterer while drinking or do they still splash it outside? I have to figure something out because they are drawing mosquitos badly this morning. I went ahead and dumped their pool but I have to figure something out on this water situation or I will likely have to get rid of them and stick with my chickens. I am going to install an automatic waterer on the chicken coop for the chickens but I am afraid the ducks will tend to drain the system the way they like playing in water. I really have to figure something out as I like them but I can't have this kind of mess. ThanksNew food and water containers, ready to go into the coop this morning.
