The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

Has anyone tried soaking and then freezing a mash made out of the crumble food? Does it work or does it just make a big mess? I want to make a few large blocks of ice mash for the birdies (chickens and ducks) that I can put in a pan or something (so it's a contained melted mess) so they have these in their coops and just in general.

I might try this when the weather warms up! Maybe soak the feed (it's not a mash, it's a combination of peas, wheat, kelp, flax seed, etc) overnight, then freeze it.

I'll give that a try! We're already saying hello to 90 degree weather, so we're making stuff now. We have little cubes of corn in ice, but that melts so fast and the ducks gobble it up before the chickens become brave enough to check it out LOL. We're gonna make a bigger block and put it in the chickens' coop (on a tray to keep bedding dry) and maybe it'll keep the coop a little cooler too. We're gonna install a mist system and add more shade to our enclosure too, but I wanted to for sure encourage eating and drinking still.

Argh, I have a broody KC duck! I say "argh" because this hen has a history of starting to set eggs and then getting bored and wandering off. Last summer we found 4 hidden nests that were all in various stages of development. I numbered her eggs and am just keeping a very close eye on her to make sure she doesn't get bored and wander off. If she does I can pop them in the incubator. I'm also feeding her separately, close to her nest so she doesn't wander off. Any other suggestions to keep her on her nest for the long haul?

I'm no expert but when I was a kid on the farm my Mum used to do pretty much what you've done; make sure they have adequate food and water near the nest, leave them alone as much as possible, watch the nest in case they do abandon it and have an incubator on stand-by.

It's easy to think they've abandon the nest when they really haven't so try and have patience. My Mum would only replenish food and water when the duck took a break off the nest or it simply had to be done and the duck wasn't moving, otherwise she stayed well clear. She only took eggs to the incubator if the duck had been off the nest for more than 2 or 3 days.
