Hi Everyone,

My name is Raven - I am a Canadian new-to-chickens hobby chick owner. I have 6 chicks, 5 easter egger hens (hopefully) and one Leghorn Rooster. They are 5 weeks old, so I am sure we will have less hens and more roosters in a couple weeks but for now I'm hoping they're all hens.

We are raising them for a hobby, and for eggs, and are currently building our first coop. For now, the babies are in a homemade brooder in our laundry room. We are dealing with a coccidiosis infection - and one of my favourite girls is very sick. They're all being treated, and today seems like she is feeling better, so I'm hoping she pulls through. Unfortunately the chicks came to me with a coccidiosis infection (which I recognized because my puppy had it) and I don't think we treated them long enough the first time because little Harriet seems to have it now. All other chicks are well, but being treated anyway just in case - I followed the guidelines by our vet, but sometimes it can be persistent so we're giving it another shot to get it out of the system - along with a full brooder clean out, sanitize, and lots of TLC.

We have loved adding the chicks to our family - they're so fun and spunky. We can't wait to get them out into their coop because our rooster continues to escape pretty much any enclosure I build for them (he's incredibly sneaky) - and we have plans for a playground of sorts outside in the their run.

This was the day we brought them all home:
- Puck is the little lady in the upper left hand corner (all black)
- Harriet is the brown lady in the right hand upper corner
- Butterscotch the Cow (nephew named him) is our big Leghorn Rooster sitting right in the middle
- Patsy is underneath him
- Stitch is the black and grey little girl in the lower part of the screen
- Leia is underneath Stitch

They have doubled in size (or tripled) since we brought them home and it feels like I go to work and come home to bigger chicks! I am so thankful for this community as I have done hundreds of hours of research on chicks, coops, food, basic needs, coccidiosis, gender, etc. since I decided to get chicks - and most of it has been on here! I am probably the most well researched newbie chick owner ever, lol.

After months of reading, I finally decided to join - thanks for having me and keep your fingers crossed for my little Harriet!

Nice to meet you all!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, Very nice to meet you Raven and your chicken family as well. Is Butterscotch the bird in your avatar? He really is a big fellow. BYC has a thread "Canadians, check-in-here." that you may want to explore. It's possible some other chicken folks live near you.
