The Life of a Battery Hen - READ THIS.

There are a lot of things people can do to limit the impact they have on the environment and to help minimize the cruelty the animals we consume. But we cannot just throw our hands in the air and say I can't fix it so I am just going to ignore it. I am reminded of a story I was told as a child.

A child and her mother are walking on the beach and they see hundreds of starfish washed ashore. The child starts throwing the starfish back into the ocean. The mother tells her daughter that she will not be able to help them all. To which the daughter replys no but I helped that one.

That is the mentality we all need to bring to the table. How can I make the world a better place today?

This makes me so mad!! I want to save every last one so bad!! It’s not the baby cockerels falt that they are males! But I would probably like to be one of the males then go through what the hens did! 😢
Very good point. Their lives are short but I guess that is the blessing. I read the Germany has made it illegal to cull chicks based on sex. I just wonder what is happening to all those cockerels

Me too! I want to build a Battery Hen and Rooster rescue! And make it to were people who love chickens and chicks can adopt them! But I don’t know if I’m going to do that. I just feel so bad for them! It makes me also want to take even better care of my birds!

Clucky I didn't read the article but I've read many in the past. I don't need another thing to be irritated about. However, I think it's a bad practice to have people going hungry while good food is destroyed for no reason. These companies all want tax breaks, the shelters and food banks always have their hands out, so why can't those cockerels be fed to weight and donated if consumers don't want to eat them?

Good point! Not only is this practice cruel, it's also wasteful and doesn't make economic sense.

I want to have my own small free range chicken farm of 400 chickens when I am older. I want to sell their eggs at woolworths. I also want to have about 100 ducks and sell their eggs too. I will try to sell male chicks and ducklings as pets, and then have the ones no one bought free ranging in a different paddock as a breeding stock. I am going to have at least 10 square feet/ chicken and a big pond for the duckies. Nothing would bring me more joy than to see hundreds of chooks and ducks every day :love .
