Hello all. I have a small flock of Black Australorps who just had their first birthday on April 1st. They are egg laying machines. You typically read/hear that egg laying hens are most productive (logically) in their first year and then drop off a little each subsequent year until they reach the age of four or five and typically stop laying altogether. The question I have, however, is...when you hear/read that egg laying hens are most productive their first year, does that mean their first year of life or the first year AFTER they begin laying? What is your experience? Thanks!

Generally between the ages of 4-6 months to 18 months is the period in which they lay best. At 18 months they will molt and stop laying while they do so, then it depends on what time of year it is as to whether they will start laying once more or wait until spring rolls around again.
