Chapter Eleven

"Hello hello hello!" I squaked at all the people passing by. Funny, I don't think they can hear me through the glass.
"Hello!!!" I tried again.
"Sorry, Apple, they can't hear you through glass. They can hear me, because I'm louder. Amazons are known for that," said Polly.
I sighed, "There is no way anyone is going to adopt me! I'm just another budgie. I'm not really fancy or anything!"
"Someone will come," Polly reassured me, "Sometimes it takes a while, but they always do come."
I just sighed again and stared out the window. It's not fair! I was just as good as all the other budgies, except that I can talk! What was so special about them anyways? I looked at the other budgies. The first was a light blue english. Oh, right. Everyone likes english budgies. The next was a light green cinnamon recessive pied. Fancy. Colbalt blue? They all like it. Lutino? Of course! Then, at the end of the line was me, a boring old cinnamon light green. Nothing special.
I hopped onto my swing and closed my eyes. A few seconds later, I opened them again, and stared out the window wondering who would finally adopt me.
The next day, early in the morning, one of the humans who live here came in along with one who didn't. They took Polly out of his cage. What were they going to do with him?
"Hello!!" I said, trying to communicate with them, even though I don't know what "Hello" means.
The human who works there looked at me with interest.
"Polly has been teaching this little budgie to talk," he said, "A parrot sometimes teaches another to do something they know how to do," He explained to the other human.
Quickly, he got out a piece of floopy wood, and scribbled something on it. He hang it on my cage. I stared at the thing, and chirped.
The humans got back to talking about Polly. After a few minutes, they put Polly in one of those cardboard boxes. I know what this means. Polly was going away! Probably being adopted!
"Polly!" I chirped, "You're being adopted!"
"I know!" He whistled from inside the box, "Isn't this exciting?"
"Yes, but I'll never see you again!" Polly didn't say a word.
"I'm sorry, this is a good thing, I'm really happy for you!"
"Don't worry. I'm happy too. Aren't we all?"
"Yes," I chirped quietly. The humans took Polly out of the room.
Polly was the only friend I had in this place, but now he was going away. What now? And I only had time to learn one word. I looked around at the other birds. Would they be friends with me?
