Ripple waited outside the burrow, preening his feathers fully for the first time in a while. He made them extra shiny. The barred flecks gleamed on the raven-black background. He wanted to look nice when he met his chicks.Minerva could feel a chick tapping on the side of its egg. She knew that it wouldn't pip for quite a while, but she clucked to the egg, encouraging it to hatch.
"Hey, Ripple!" She said, hopping off of her little clutch. "Come look! This one right here." She stuck her wing out and pointed to one of the eggs. "It's trying to pip! Listen!" He peeked his head into Minerva’s burrow.
Ripple listened. He clucked to it softly, as he had heard Cattail do when she was alive. The tapping increased."Hey, Ripple!" She said, hopping off of her little clutch. "Come look! "Oh wow!" Minerva whispered. She clucked a motherly cluck. "Keep clucking!"Ripple listened. He clucked to it softly, as he had heard Cattail do when she was alive. The tapping increased.
Ripple clucked to the chick. He watched as the shell pushed up. A little beak pushed through."Oh wow!" Minerva whispered. She clucked a motherly cluck. "Keep clucking!"
Minerva jumped in the air and spun in a circle. "Oh my gosh, Ripple!" She watched their chick continue to peck. She stood, touching her wing to Ripple's without embarrassment or badly even noticing.Ripple clucked to the chick. He watched as the shell pushed up. A little beak pushed through.
Minerva didn't take her eyes off her chick. "Yes!" She squeaked.Splash was wandering around Minerva's burrow, looking for some grubs. She heard clucking and poked her head in. She saw what was happening and walked into the burrow. "Is a chick hatching?" She asked quietly.
