That chicken is HUGE!
Love the picture, btw. If I wasn't taking the meaties to the butcher at 6am tomorrow, I'd have to get one of my Goldens to pose for a photo like that.

Also, sorry to everyone that I haven't posted any updated charts recently. I am recording the weights you guys post, but it's finals week, and I haven't had the time to get the graphs into picture form yet. Soon. Maybe.

Okay....I've been lurking on this thread for awhile watching everyone's weigh-ins.....and I wish I would of let a few of mine get to 6-8 weeks!!!

Ya'll are making me so jealous! DH told me we're definitely going to try them again next year, maybe get them before the warm weather comes in.

And by the way that is one BIG chicken!

We weighed our 3wk olds this morning but are waiting until this evening to weigh the 5wk olds since it is getting pretty hot here and I don't want to stress them out too much when it's just getting hotter every minute. Our 3wk olds had an average weight of 21 oz. We have switched them over already to a 20% feed and they will be getting out of the brooder sometime this week.

I took my meaties to the butcher yesterday and picked them up today. Their final live weight average was 5.5 lbs, and the average butchered weight was 3.5 lbs. In fact, I only had one 3 lb-er, and one 4.5 lb-er, the rest were almost exactly the same. The butcher had each one shrink-wrapped and labeled with their weights, which was very nice and convenient. And it only cost $2 a piece, so I definitely felt it was worth the saved time and effort. Can't wait to try one for dinner!

Oh, and it looks like I have a few too many male ducks, so I'm thinking of butchering one or two of them next week. My butcher won't do ducks. All of you who have processed your own chickens have convinced me that I can do it myself. Maybe.

So, I have 24 x 1 week old Freedom Rangers! Do you guys want to see my data, too? It will likely be a lot different from the CXs, but some might be interested. Do you post the average weight? or something else?

Yes yes yes! Please join! The more data, the better. It will definitely be worthwhile to see how the Freedom Rangers compare to the CXs, and another person on here is doing capons.
For weights, the average weight is all we need, but if you want to include more, like the range, that would be nice to. On the first post, there is a list of data that I need to add you to the chart, like what hatchery you got them from and what you are feeding them. That way we can compare environmental factors to weight gain. Welcome!

I've been posting my FR weights over on the Ranger grow out journals. They're 7 weeks old tomorrow. Is it too late to include my data with the folks on this thread? I think it'd be interesting to see how they're growth stacks up against the CX's.

Here's my starting info!

# of chicks and breed: 24 Freedom Ranger
Hatchery source and hatch date: Freedom Ranger Hatchery 4/27/11
Brand and protein % of feed: Modesto Milling soy-free starter 22% protein (2-3 weeks), Magill Ranch starter 19% protien (until week 7)
Whether you are restricting feed or not: no restrictions
Housing (after brooder): tractor
Weights for each week (if you have them): week 1 = 2.1 oz

By all means, if you already have weights recorded, copy and paste them over here and I'll get you added. The more participants and data, the better!
