All I can say is if I ever get meaties again, I'm ordering them from Ideal, and feeding them 26% gamebird feed.

ETA: InHisService and BigDaddy'sGurl, today's weigh day!

We will be getting another 26 from Welp tomorrow. They hatched yesterday. Again we will be feeding Extreme non-medicated chick starter for 3wks (18%), then Kruse game bird grower (20%). We will be restricting feed starting on day 5. When they leave to brooder, they will be living in a large tractor.

Yay! I'm glad to see more people taking an interest. Welcome, 4H Chicken Mom! (4H rocks!)

Potter Watch, I got your second batch added, thanks! And congrats, how exciting to be getting them tomorrow!

Here's an updated chart:

Thanks, I had already added that information. I was just saying that I hadn't heard anything new in a few days

What day did you plan on weighing? I had April 11 (capons) and 13 (CX) for your groups...
And I'd love to know more about what you're doing with your capons. When did you plan to caponize?

BigDaddy'sGurl :

I'll be honest: after this venture I don't know if I will try again. I figured my costs for these meaties and each one cost me all told 6.99 each IF (that's a big IF) the last 50 lbs of feed was all it took. They are now just about out of feed again. That's another expenditure I wasn't expecting as they should have been just about big enough to butcher by now. I figure my cost per bird will now be closer to 10.00 by the time I butcher, if I wait. At this point, I may have to scrap it and process early with some nearly 3 pound birds. This is getting expensive!

I'm not even going to try to figure out cost. I know it's going to be expensive! To make it worse, when my husband told his uncle I was raising meaties, his uncle told us he wants 5. The uncle and his wife have been hugely helpful since we bought our house, so they can have whatever they want. I just wish I'd known earlier, because I would have bought more to start.

The meats are finally out in the tractor - we had some unexpected rain this week and I wanted to keep them out of any mud. They went restricted a couple days ago, and on to Flock Raiser on Monday. I forgot to mention that I'm also putting the Meyer broiler vitamins in the water.

Sorry for the delay again....

1 @ 4.25 lbs (pulllet)
1 @ 5.5 lbs
1 @ 5.75 lbs
2 @ 6 lbs (pullets)
1 @ 6 lbs
1 @ 6.75 lbs
1 @ 7 lbs

total weight 47.25 lbs

average weight 5.9 lbs

Thanks again for keeping the stats!!
I am considering doing 1/2 this weekend, and the other half 2 weeks from now...will let you know.

Also considering getting more...before it gets hot. I will decide after processing day, lol.

Okay, new data for the week! These birds are some eating fools! I thought they were a bit behind last time, so I gave them a couple extra days before restricting their feed. That may have been a mistake... Hopefully next week I'll be able to tell the sexes apart - I have a couple I can tell are roos for sure, but the others are questionable. Luckily for me my biggest (a roo) has black spots on his head and back so I can track him individually.

Now out in the tractor with 12 on/12 off restriction. I'll switch them to Flock Raiser in a couple of days - I want them to be exposed to the cocci in the soil for a couple of days since the Amprolium doesn't actually build immunity... It just stops the growth/reproduction of the cocci so the chicken's immune system can destroy it and make memory cells.

Range: 30.375 oz. - 36.5 oz.
Average: 33.45 oz.
St Dev.: 2 oz.

Total Weight: 468 oz./29.27 lbs.

Change from last week: +68%

You really have to stop this. You're making the rest of us look bad.

I use a kitchen scale. Your math makes me feel inadequate.

Seriously, though, the way you calculate your weights really gives a lot of information, especially the change from last week and the st dev! Thank you for doing that. If I wasn't already doing 3 research projects for school, I would consider putting in that effort as well...
