The Middle Tennessee Thread

Well I just got the phone call DH is on the road home from Dalton Poultry Show

He has my Heritage Buckeye Trio as planned.

He also has found 3 silkie chicks for buddies for my lone chick Jaylee
(no action at all on the chicken or duck eggs due today making it nec. to tell DH just go ahead and buy whatever chicks he could find at the show)

All birds are in carriers in the cab of the truck w/ him.

The Road in front of our house looks _really bad_  totally white, everything was wet, then we got about 1/2 inch of snow an hr ago,
so their is ice forming from the wet under the snow : (

I really wasn't envisioning dangerous driving conditions when I made these plans for him to get birds in Feb.
He is an amazingly good driver, yesterday on the way to feed store 2 semi trucks driving side by side in front of him skidded, bumped and spun out,
& he managed to avoid getting hit and pull over to check on other drivers, everyone was fine. But still, that is nerve wracking, & I'm feeling some guilty that
he is having to drive over 2 icy snowy mtns today to fetch me birds, *and he hates birds*.  I'm seriously going to have to do something extra nice for him,
& that he got to have brunch at a buffet on the way to get the birds does not count anymore at this point, when the roads were fine that was his treat,
now that he is driving over 80 miles & 2 mtns in extreemly dangerous conditions I really owe him big time! ...

I'm glad he is safe and you found some friends for Jaylee. I am so sorry we had to cancel.

My thoughts & prayers are with your husband as he drives home safely with your new birds.

You'll love the silkies. They are really sweet little birds and they get along with other chickens very well. They're also just cute as can be. Jaylee will make some great little friends!

DH made it home safe.
6 live birds w/ him
hen laid egg enroute , JUMBO, almost too lg for my hand! DH very happy at size of egg (Chickens will win him over yet!)

pic etc. later after everyone settled in...

Welcome littlechicklet!! You'll enjoy this thread, very informative, very fun. I like you only have a small backyard flock that we do for pure joy and of course the lovely eggs! You must have gotten a lot of snow last night and today....what do your chickens think of the snow?

and thanks again to everyone for the warm welcome. We got maybe 1/2" of snow at the most. And all the chickens with the exception of Pet were hiding in the coop. I went up before we left for Knoxville and opened the gate & the large coop door. They looked at me like I was nuts but when we got home they are out. I am glad I am not alone in having a small flock just for the joy of it!

Sorry to hear about everyone's bad weather and losses over your way.

FeyRaine- glad your husband made it home safely and found some chicks to go with your lone chick.

I'll post more pics tomorrow when we get them all downloaded but look at this!

This is my New Heritage Buckeye Roo !
Look how huge & beautiful he is !!! I'm crazy for him already.
He is SO gentle too, I mean he just had a long confusing trip, and had hardly been out of the travel carrier 90 secs. when
I reached over & picked him up for the photo -- he didn't flinch or move away or make a noise he just calmly let me pick him up like I'd done
it everyday since he was an egg, as you can see I could barely hold him he is soooo big but he didn't fuss or wiggle or anything!

(pls ignore my Michaeline man show suit, not my best look, but it is way cold on our mtn today)

I am sooo excited!

Oh & you should SEE the Hen & pullet oh my they are just as lovely. It was overcast almost snowing and still the Hen's feathers *glistened* ,
this Trio is simply radiant. I have wanted quality Buckeyes for over a decade now, I am tearing up with joy.
This Trio came from Chris McCary, he is a breeder of Buckeyes and he selected this group for me specifically.
I told him what I wanted & also that I'm a small person so he picked taking temperament into account esp. on the Roo.
I am completely thrilled-- they are beyond what I could have imagined.

The Hen laid an egg on the way home & my DH was nearly dancing around about how large the egg is, really I could not be more happy w/ these birds from Chris.

Thanks for letting me gush to ppl who understand : )

IDK.... might need it. I just know I will need a run for the new pens later in the spring. I am thinking of asking the people at the top of the road if I can have some of his fence that BLEW down in the storm. He may be reusing it IDK.

I saw where someones CHIMNEY was BLOWN OVER onto the house
