The Middle Tennessee Thread

I believe someone was talking about me....my ears were burning.
Colors on silkies- BBS works the same as BBS in any other breed. True black and consistent blacks are rare and some people have started specializing in them only. Anne is very correct in all of the above (old brain my foot). White will cover things in birds like say black will do in dogs. Sometimes breeding white birds together you will end up with something other than white. Then you know that there is something in our bird's ancestry.
Partridge can be bred to other colors but I don't mix. I am not one to deviate from the easy way. Thus my birds are white and buff. They are not mixed for hatching eggs. Each color still has challenges though with gold or silver undercolor in whites and smut in buffs.
I believe all of this can be better answered in the genetics section Silkie thread. Sonoran Silkies is a bit of an expert and would/could answer all questions much better than I.

Do you have a link? I like threads that are not chickens on parade.... I like to learn from pics not just tell someone they are pretty.

BTW I looked at that little white silkie I hatched from you and the toes look really good with a nice little space between those odd little extra toes... still freaks me out seeing the extra toes.

Well now I just wait to see what I have cooking from Hardingpoultry or I will wait till they hatch and y'all can tell me what I have LOL. Maybe I need to go stalker her profile and she what she has.

BTW 10 Eng Orp eggs made it to lockdown

I would think 1-2 hens per roo.  Some breeds are just harder to get fertile eggs from and you just need to have them in trios usually.  Example my SLW 3 hens MAX... my BLRW he can cover 6 for some odd reason.  Same breed just not the same fertility.
maybe he ( your blrw roo) just works extra hard to get every hen several time to MAKE SURE they are fertile. LOL

Is that it!  He needs to talk to the SLW roos.  I don't think they visit the girls more than once a day each if that.

LOL maybe the hens are not in the mood. Then again. Usually if they dance and the hen denies him, he gets it anyway.
My black bantams are the cutest. The roo has to check everything for the hens, when I throw treats, he has to see if it is tasty. Every morning he checks the nesting boxs and rearranges the nest before hens go to lay.

It was a good number..... Not sure how many. I didn't know what colors they were or anything so I would toss eggs from each pen in with my other eggs... figured I could tell the silkies no matter the color LOL. So of 12 baskets in the hatcher all but 2 maybe have some silkie egg. Some have 1 some 2 and some 3 eggs.... I don't think I had 4 from any one pen.

You want some more Lavs? I have 12-15 now. You could spot me some silkies when you can spare them.

I do want more Lavs. :D I am in Nashville Friday, will PM you.

My BLRW roo can cover at least four... Haven't tried him with any more! They are always my most fertile eggs.
I have found that doing a littlw trimming up in the nether regions helps fertility on the silkies quite a bit. Trimming the hair out of their eyes helps too. My roos are a lot randier when they can actually see the girls.

This won't work if you plan on showing them, but it definitely helps with the breeders.
Oooh, I knew about trimming around their vents but didn't think about around their eyes. That may explain some of my fertility issues with certain roos. We tend not to show the roos because they are loud when you have to keep them in a hotel room overnight. ;)

Thank you!
