The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

Golly, that's a lot of money. It seems I have good taste in birds and no money to back it up!

Thanks for the information. I just really want to get some fancy ducks for this empty dog run. I have a big dish of water in there and this years Christmas tree for ducks to hide in.

Yep, I've noticed you have taste like I do, rarer the better.
Some good oddities that wont break the bank are java and wandering treeducks, again if you can find them, ball park of $100- $150 pr
Eyton's, fairly common bout the same range.
N. American ruddies, chiloe widgeon, most of the teal are under $150, of course in your area any of the divers would be good, though they will need more than a dish of water. Smew are very nice, but in that $500 range again. Hartlaub's are nice and rare, bout $400 pr

Really just depends on what you are looking for.

One I think would do you justice on beauty and do well in your climate without the need for massive water is baikal and falcated teals (or duck in the falcated's caes any more) Falcateds run $150- $200 pr, baikals are $300- $400.
They both need little water, take cold very well being of northern origins to start with, are drop dead beautiful, and arent that common.

What kind of price range are you looking for, that would help narrow down the species list a good bit, very few to any are available under $50 any more, but most the common stuff is between that and $250.

If you had the water, the golden eyes would be a good climate wise choice too $185 american, $250 barrow's $500 bufflehead

Yep, that's the lady who informed me of it when I was talking about that 20 pages or so back. I personally contacted the Georgia DNR State Biologist

Here's what he told me

Mr. Webb,

Thank you for your questions and concerns regarding permits to hold migratory waterfowl in Georgia.
As I understand the laws, the State of Georgia does not issue a permit for migratory waterfowl. Because migratory waterfowl are not addressed specifically in Georgia's permit laws, we defer to the federal permit process administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Persons having the proper federal permits are allowed to hold/breed/sell migratory waterfowl in Georgia in accordance with their federal permits.

I have tried to follow the links she has listed in there to find the actual WRITTEN LAW, but there is none, all those codes have taken me to hunting related waterfowl rules, not captive breeding laws.
I'm not pushing the issue, that e-mail back was good enough for me. That and the fact that I kept them for so long, was inspected by State and Federal Game Wardens 2-4 times a year and none ever said anything about a banned law. According to what Linda told me though, this law has been in effect since the 70's???

I just e-mailed her guy out of curiousity, will let yall know what he says
