The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

Ok so i love my baby ducks.. but they make my house smell like.... well..... DUCKS.. I love the babies, but there is no way im hatching out any more without a place to put them where they wont stink up my house. holy moly its crazy! Anywho..
BoggyBottomBantams, Who exactly do i talk to about the permits for buying out of state? Seeing as though im not part of the continental united states, it makes it a little hard to drive a few states over to pick up some ducks..

outside of maybe Alaskan State laws (contact your state Dept. of Animal Health), there is no permit for buying them, just for selling.
Your sellers will have to have both the Federal Migratory Waterfowl Sales and Disposal Permit from the U.S. Dept of the Interior, and they will also have to be N.P.I.P. Certified in most cases. But that's all on the seller, not you the buyer.
If you decide to start selling you will have to contact the USDI Fish and Wildlife Service and request an application for the Sales permit, and if selling out of state, contact the Dept of Agriculture from your state and get the N.P.I.P. (National Poultry Improvement Plan) certification.

But your are good to buy away outside of possible state requirements

Oh, also as for the inside duck!! Yeah, I hear ya, build you a decent outdoor brooder for them!!!
I have kept some indoors to start them, but only the super expensive, and frail species, they can get ruff, LOL

I use brooder 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet tall on 2 foot tall legs, use 1/4- 1/2 " hardware cloth wire and one end is boxed in with plywood, about 3 feet, fully open on the inside with a heat light for them for the first 4-8 weeks, basically til they start to feather up.

Heres another picture of Nubbins white band on his neck that is getting whiter and bigger each day that passes.. Finally got a better picture than the first one i posted..

Now that is od cause like 1lpoock said, they should feather out as female colored, still should be a boy, but got me wondering if it's possibly a mix of some thing cause it should be 6 months old before it get that in

Quail's hollar Farm :

It's amazing that you could keep all those ducks in one acre, I'm sixteen and into pheasants rather than ducks, until one day when I went to a friend's house and saw his teals. I keep other types of ducks, but I never kept mandarins. My question is, how big are they compared to domestics?

microscopic!
Guess you saw the teal, mandarins are the same size as our wood ducks about 10 inches or so long when standing an about 4 inches thick.
That's why you can keep so many on an acre, of course keep in mind a 1 acre pen is 42000+ square feet too, not too small.

Saw your post on the palawans, do you have those yourself, or just know about them, ask because I will be looking for some in the near future, we actually have 150 acres or so here, so actually it's going to be way more than 1 acre this next go round with waterfowl and pheasants, not counting over 500 banatms breeders and wild turkeys and peafowl. Gone need to hire help just to feed all the little buggers.
